Cleaning off my desk (its been a number of years) I found a box with various cartridges which I'm having trouble figuring out what for. The box is marked 7.9 mauser by Eley London and the stamp on the cartridge reads "7.9 or 8mm Eley" The bullet is fairly big - I'm thinking 180 gr or higher nickel colour blunt round nose. Any suggestions what it was used in and vintage? Thanks

We need a picture of the box to be sure but since Eley became part of Explosive Trades Ltd in 1919 and adopted the Kynoch headstamp soon after, I suggest these are pre WWI. In their 1914 catalogue they offer a round nosed 225 grain bullet at £8.7.6d per thousand (about USD33).

Made for use in 7.92mm sporting rifles.
