Anybody with the scoop on why Eley does not list "Practice" .22LR in its product list? It has been suggested that Eley provides only the cases and has this ammo manufactured in Mexico?

well how about this

the brass casing is not as highly polished as on higher cost eley but the crimp is clean and firm and the bullet is relatively free from defects and there is good lubrication on the bullet

priming compound and propellant look to be the same as on other low cost eley

it is manufactured on the machines used for elel standard that have been rebuilt

the ammo has fliers and some deviation on the feet per second but if you weigh it it may shoot very well

off to the usa for a shoot in st louis for 3 weeks so no more replies after wednesday

jeff

i have some and some standard and rifel and eps and like them all

Just a note...

I had an unfortunate incident with a client the otherday over some Eley.

As it turns out, a lot of the Eley brought in by the distributor and sold over the past few years may be "dated" for lack of a better term and the lube may be on its last legs.

Before buying any large quantities, do some research on the lot # to make sure you don't end up with a short shelf life. Or worst yet, unusable ammo.

Eley Practice is basically rejects of higer end Eley products (like EPS etc)which did not meet the specs. You will notice some lots have diffrent bullts than others (in shape).
It shoots very well for its price, actually sometime better than other more costly Target Ammo. I am on to my 5th case of Eley Practice, 3 cases with bullets that look like Eley Tenex and two case of regular bullet shape (I will have to check the lot #)
Never had any problems with this ammo in my SP20, Pardini or even IZH35.
Buy it if while you can i have heard the prices are going up.

I just got another case of practice in today. Lot number 3106-30225. The cartridge and bullet look to be in good condition.

The older Eley Benchrest ammunition is very old (but still good!) ammunition. It was discontiuned some time back.

JEC: Not sure why Eley practice is not listed on their site. As far as I know it is still in production; would be dissapointing if it was not. It works real well for just that - practice!

I am advised by staff at North Silva (Eley Importer) that Practice is being discontinued and therefore not included in the Eley Website product information... So, now the dilema will be whether to stock up on what is left, or to wait for the replacement .... I'm sure that Eley, will strive to keep their market share by providing another low cost product that is better than the Practice. It doesn't make sense that they would replace Practice with something that is less consistent.

Eley practice is being renamed to something else, I have heard "Standard" and price will be jacked up. Stock up while you can......

As I understand it, ammo is catagorized after it is produced and tested. The pracitce grade ammo is going to be in short supply if all the ammo turns out to be very consistent. This is generally the case at the Lapua factory, and I suspect also at the Eley factory. It costs as much to make good ammo as poor ammo, and if good ammo is all that comes out of the machine, then it gets priced accordingly. The solution however is quite simple: why not practice with match grade ammo in the first place? That is the only variety that will tell you what your shooting is really like. That is all I practice with.
