Elk and trail cams

Oh buddy
Elk are as bad as bears with cams
They must smell us on the cam

I’ve found my cams in pieces before now

I had a bait barrel strapped to a tree with two 2 inch ratchet straps, bull elk got pissed and ripped the barrel clean away from the tree

It seems odd that if they smelled human scent they would go near it.

Kinda flies in the face of watching the wind when you are hunting them.

Ya elk are nearly as rough on cameras as bears. I always use metal camera boxes lagged to a tree. Mostly just slobbery pictures and cracked IR lens. So far I feel lucky with elk compared to bear damage

More than once I've had elk rip apart an area that I had been sitting in the day before. Must be something about the scent they hate.

I've seen a woodpecker destroy a game camera.
YES! I've had that happen. Plus bears, plus moose... I've found a camera facing 90° from the way it was originally pointing, from moose rubbing against it. I had another happily taking pictures of grass blowing in the breeze because a bear ripped it off the tree.

Moose too. They seem to like to sniff and rub them. I don’t think it has anything to do with human scent as they’ve rubbed mine off weeks after I put the cam up. I think it’s more just curiosity. They look out of place for sure
