Wow! it is 2024 and another hunting season is here. At my stage in life, it is difficult to
say how many hunts I may still have, but as long as I can get out there, I will hunt.

Taking off for Elk this weekend. Strictly a freezer filler hunt, so am very optimistic.

If I look at history, I have no reason to complain. Elk, Moose and deer have all been
an important part of my life since a very early age. Black Bear have also figured into
the mix.

Thank goodness to have lived in such a wonderful area of the world. Dave.

Good luck to you Dave, our hunting party heads out Sunday, the elk season here opens Sept 17th and moose Sept 24th, I got drawn for bull moose in the calling season so hopefully fill the tag, 3 point or better Elk are over the counter. I know what you mean about not wasting a year, my first elk / moose camp was in 1978 so this is year #46, God willing I'll get another 10 years

Best of Luck Dave!
I know you won't need it.... you seem to always get what you need from the land every season

I know the feeling! It was 2 degrees this morning and the first thought was missing an opportunity of chasing elk bugles on the season opener. Good luck guys, hopefully you will share your adventures.

This year is my first hunting season in BC. I was a legal resident on the 1st of September so I went over to the FrontCounter office on the 3rd, got my FWID and bought damn near every GOS tag I could get. I'm in the west Kootenay's, so, while the hunting isn't as good as it is in Northern BC, it's still wild to me how many tags and opportunities I can have here in this province. Can't wait to get out this weekend and see what I can put in the freezer.

Good luck with your hunt!!
No elk here that we can easily hunt so moose it will be leaving on the 21st for up to 9 days !

Hopefully you have been able to fill your freezer Dave!

I came back from my 2nd year, 1 week trip of elk hunting last Sunday, and head out for another week of moose hunting tomorrow am.

Sure wish I had pursued the elk years ago, but for what ever reason was just too busy to get into another style of hunt. 3 years ago that changed when we were seeing more elk on our moose hunt trip, and then vowed to learn to call. Spent all spring/summer that next year learning to use the reed call. Was able to call in a nice 5x5 to within 25m that first year, but we are in a 6x6 zone. Great video of that non the less with preserved memories.

This year it payed well for me and was able to call in a nice 6x6 elk.

Gotta get out and enjoy what we have while we have the strength and fortitude to, and before the gov changes it all and takes it away from us!

The forest fires in the East Kootenays have dispersed and displaced the game in our area. By this time of year we usually have several different bulls bugling and chasing cows. Currently there are no bulls, only four local cows hanging around........:(

The full moon doesn't help and neither does the 6.5' male grizzly living on our acreage. In addition, I've seen more hunters in the field this year since the late 1980's. Guys absolutely everywhere. Who would of thought with the ridiculous price of fuel that every guy and his dog would be out hunting.

Our WT deer population has also diminished to about seven animals. One spike buck and six does. I have never seen a more strange year indeed. The Mt. Morro fire is apparently still burning behind our place, I can only assume this is part of the cause.

Fall is our favorite time of year, I think it could be a real challenge though for 2024.

Good luck everyone on your hunt!.....:)

Well, I spent 4 days in the farm country, and the elk are all somewhere else at this time. Did not hear any bugling, either.
So, I decided to take a break, and return later, after the rut has ended. Full moon and warm weather conspire against
one as well. Hopefully, there will be a better chance later. Truly enjoyed my solitary time, though. :) Dave.

That's too bad Dave...I was rootin for ya ! The old man used to say....a bad day huntin is a helluva lot better than ANY day at work ! There's time left...here's wishin all you guys luck !!

I spent 47 years waiting to retire so I could have weekends off finally let alone weekdays. Turned out had to retire early and can't walk worth beans due to injuries that are not fixable. At least can deer hunt and I put in for cow moose to at least try but time will tell.

For many years I had great hunts without bagging anythng all season; hence, my signature line.
