Anyone else notice there seems to be more elk around this year? In the area I live/hunt around 526, 522, 359 I am seeing more elk and seeing them in places I havn't seen them before. Is this trend happening in other areas as well or just up here. Or maybe I am just in the right places at the right time more often.

input??

Well they've been on the rise elsewhere - so it wouldn't shock me. Elk are pretty 'pushy' when it comes to getting their hands on local resources.

Sometimes that impacts the deer. How's your deer population doing?

i'd believe it, 359 is adjacent to where the open season for elk (7-20*) is going to occur in BC.

418 is dwindling quickly. At home there are lots of little groups running about, usually 15 or so but they are very shy and also cover alot of area. It is challenging to try and pattern them. Still three years for a cow tag so I don't think the numbers are hurting in the farmland like they are where the wolves tend to get the munchies every couple days.

Lots of elk around the east side of Okanagan Lake, south of Kelowna and around Naramata. Hart to spot them the in the dense forrest, but lots of fresh tracks. Observed one elk swimming across the Okanagan Lake once.

There arn't as many deer as a couple years ago. I was attributing this to the heavy snowfall of winter 06/07. But maybe the elk being pushy has something to do with that as well.
