Visited him for a day in the mid 70's,at his home in Salmon Idaho. That day was filled with interesting stories from his firearms and hunting experiences. A day I'll always treasure as the highlight of my shooting and hunting life. My avatar
is a photo I took of him as I was preparing to leave. And my favorite handgun
of course a 4" S&W model 29 sporting a set of S&W factory ivory grips. Also, contacted Milt Sparks, and they agreed to make me a replica
Of Elmers holster.
My latest Keith treasure, and my only 'Safe Queen' is a S&W Elmer Keith Commemorative.

JP you had a chance to rub shoulders and listen to a legend. That picture must be one of your most prized processions. The more I look at it the more I realize he had quite a set of mitts on him and that I'm sure didn't hurt him as a pistolero with those large frame, and heavy recoiling revolvers he shoot so well. It's good that you tell this story again, I sure theres lots of new people year after year that don't have any idea who that is in your avatar.
That it is. As is the memory of that day. I did meet him a year or so later for the second time. It was at a dinner following a gun show in Kalispell Montana, where he and his wife were the guests of honour. This was shortly after he had been the recipient of the 1st Handgunner of The Year award.
Great piece. It's truly unfortunate that little by little this history is being lost. I remember reading articles by Keith, Cooper, Skelton, Wilson etc, that fueled my love of firearms. I guess that really ages me. Now we have writers that change their opinions more then they change their shorts. There's still some great gun people out there, but their hard to sort out from the mass. True gun nutz spot them. Want the days of old , no BS, this works this is crap.
His son Bart writes some interesting articles in Shooting Times.Skeeter is a bit of a legend too.
