I have now been powder coating for a number of years and am happy with the PC coated bullets I’ve been casting and shooting. I’ve been given great advice by the likes of Yomama and a few others on here. I even managed to build myself a PID for my toaster oven/Lee 20 Production pot.

I have successfully used Harbour Freight, Princess Auto and Emerald Coatings Tool Blue. Now I want to try some different colours to spice things up.

Looking at ordering from Emerald Coatings again. So far I have looked at Phantom High Gloss Clear (1149), RAL Jet Black (9005), Maple Penny Metallic (1108). I’ll order another Tool Blue (1196) again cause I know it works.

I’m wondering if anyone has used any of those that I’ve selected and have they worked for you? If not what would you recommend along the same colour lines?

Thanks for reading and hopefully responding.

Beware of powders containing TGIC, the SDS now says it’s pretty carcinogenic.
I switched to TGIC-free powders from Emerald, they appear to be less dangerous but still not food grade safe.

Just use the same ventilation/exhaust fan set up as you would with lead casting. Only the vapours given off when baking TGIC are dangerous. Here is my setup for casting and powder coating

Thank you for the replies Yomomma and Stranger. So Phantom Gloss (1149) and Jet Black (9005) should be good to go? I already know Tool Blue (1196) works.

Any recommendations of other colours that have worked well for you?
Any colour that would be close to copper?

Nice setup!
Unfortunately it's hard to eliminate all powder particles in the air, especially with shake and bake process or electrostatic gun application, not many people can afford permanent enclosure/exhaust setup with massive fan.
And yes, I believe the powder itself is harmful, not just the baking off-gassing. Wearing particle mask when handling powders is not a bad idea.

TGIC-free powders are a bit picky compared to regular, you might need to tweak the application compared to traditional. I always had great results with e.g. Tool Blue but had to switch to different chemistry...
New Jet Black works for me, but I've only used it for low-velocity rounds so far.
Also, Leaf Green and Traffic blue, not as smooth as an old Blue, but OK for my purposes. Never tried any metallic colours (yet).
Read and follow curing schedule, especially if applied in 2 or more layers.

Once again thanks for the information. As I continue to research I am realizing how little I knew! But by some miracle it worked for me. I did do allot of research but obviously not enough. My quest is near.

Hopefully one last question. I noticed that some PC is polymer (more common I think) and some is polyurethane. Is one better than the other? Do they both coat the same? From what I’ve read the answer is no. They are just slightly different. Ok that’s 2 questions.

All powder coatings are polymers. Polymers are the base chemistry of all plastics. Common polymers include polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, and polytetrafluoroethylene.

For bonding good enough to make a good bullet coating, which suffers strong abrasive and deformation forces, you want a polyester coating.

Usually eating a bullet isn't something you do often . I am soon to do this for the same time .

I like the Phantom Glass Black powder. It goes on fairly thick compared to Tool Blue, great if you need to bulk up a mold that throws a little skinny. Sometimes it looks like it doesn't give 100% coverage, but I've found that it's just the pigment that can be a bit splotchy. The base still completely covers.

Battlerife thanks for the valuable information/explanation of the various polymers.

Thank you to those who have responded I have gained valuable knowledge through your collective experiences.

I love the clear coat, goes on thick and coats very well. Personally i love mixing high gloss black with white 20/80 to 80/20 mixture. if you find a powder doesn't come out coated very well mix it with another colour. in the picture i have different colours i mixed. Black and White, White and Blue, clear. The only colour there that wasn't mixed is the Clear Coat

I have been wanting to try the phantom high gloss clear but it seems to always be out of stock. I’m mostly shooting cast out of vintage rifles and the clear just looks right in those applications to me. Fingernail colours just doesn’t work for my old brain when fed into a ‘76/‘86 Winchester!
