Possible a dumb question here, but can 12g flares be fired from a standard shotgun?

Are they just designed to be fired from a flare gun?

Thanks

Pretty sure you can fire them out of a shotgun. I have heard that if your shotgun has a modified or tighter choke that the flare can get stuck and overheat and ruin your barrel, but I've seen them fired out of a barrel with a x-full choke with no ill effects. I doubt I'd risk it though.

As long as you use a fairly open choke it seems ok, I've fired a few through an open choke 18" barrel, the flare will not fit through a full choke and where a little close for comfort in a mod (i took one apart) The flare is essentially a little rocket, and the magnesium part that is responsible for the glow doesn't light until the rocket motor is used up about 40' out on the little ones. They are dirty as all hell though, and i personally wouldn't use a gun i cared all that much about. Make sure you are disposing of them in a legal manner; we had to call the local police and tell them the time and location we would be getting rid of the expired ones, not sure if this is how you do it everywhere.

I've fired them out of an improved cylinder barrel on numerous occasions, a couple of members here have witnessed it ;) Lots of residue left in the barrel, but cleans up easy with no damage.
Fill your boots, just don't set anything (one) on fire! :p

They are just expensive as hell

And I hear pretty dirty as well.

AFAIK they function best when used in a shotgun with an open choke. Look here:

$14.94 for 5

Just noticed they have the description for the signal flares mixed up with the description for bear bangers.

it's not exactly cheap but then again you're not taking them to the range, you're mearly keeping some with you in case of emergency...

And I hear pretty dirty as well.

Same argument: you can shoot some just to get used to it, but it's not like you're gonna shoot tons of it... and even if they're dirty you ARE gonna shoot them through whatever gun you have if that's what it take for the rescrue to find you...

It would be easy enough to make some smoke generators/grenades, just make some rocket candy & put in a cardboard tube or something, probably would not even need a fuse, just a windproof lighter or something like that it might be better adapted for daytime use. I should probably get an adapter for my cz flare pistol that would make it a little more usable.

Good point and enough justification to myself for a new purchase ha

Best to always clean yer shotguns soon after flare use as the residue left in the bore be a tad more corrosive than black powder fouling.
Hot water down the pipe followed by dry patching and oiling works fine.

My late brother found a whole bunch of 12 G flares out in the woods bordering his residence, almost certainly dumped there by someone who'd burgled a house. I have them now but would rather not shoot one out of my nice guns, or even carry even one hunting- I can see me loading it by accident and missing a shot or even setting the woods on fire. If I though I was in situations where flares would be helpful, I get one of those pen size launcher sets, or use the single pop distress flares I have, plastic tubes with a pull chain that launch the flare, probably the best choice- have those from my deep water boating days. They look more or less like this:
