Been shooting 155 lapua scenars out my .308 often 1/4 moa (100 yards) or better over 56.1gr. Of Varget... Finally have access to a range out to 1000 and am still maintaining some great groups but am wondering what size groups you would consider good and great at this range with a .308

Have been tempted to try something heavier than the 155's but given that this rig only has a 20" pipe I don't see any great returns on drop or drift when I plug it into my ballistics app.

Thoughts? Do you get trapped in the relentless pursuit to keep changing components to try and better your groups or do you find something that shoots well and spend your time on shooting form?

Thx

Doh, yes 46.1 not 56.... Would need to use my hydraulic press to cram that much varget in there ;-)

As far as group sizes, I have a 12"x12" plate that if I do my part can ring 10 out of 10 pretty consistently... I will throw up some cardboard this week and measure some of my groups but I just measured the paint splatters from my last time out and they were about 7" apart at the furthest point and if I remember correctly I threw 25 rounds at it and landed 22.

I am quite happy with how I have been shooting this year considering I have fired more rounds this year already than I have in the last 7 since I had children...

Very much doubt you'll get better groups than 1/4" at 100(what rifle you have matters though.), but the endless pursuit is part of what makes shooting fun.

Thanks for the replies, I am very happy with the performance I'm getting at 100, there is a certain rush when your on that 5th shot of the string and your looking not to blow that tiny little group you put the first four into... A feeling only shooters would understand...

The location I am shooting out to 1k is a cut line that is maybe 15' wide with bush on both sides and a big burm from the dozer at the end. Wind isn't really much of a factor at all... Might just leave this one alone and start working up some loads for my 7mm as it should be back from the smith in a couple weeks.

This is the rifle:

Bolt: Combo Tikka T3 Tactical Bolt Handle RH black melonite 1.75" black tactical knob and Shroud from Glade Armory.
