Bought a .22 trainer at the auction. Figured I paid too much, I've got several of the No 1 trainers but this one looked a bit different.
Very pleased to find that it is an Enfield Rifle, RF Short. Mk.II like the one at:
http://rifleman.org.uk/index-6.html
Complete with volley sights and windage rear sight.
At the auction, the bore was dirty and looked like it could be rough. Just cleaned it and the bore is great - looks like new.
Looking at the faint original markings, it looks like it is dated 1895 and I*.

What would it's original model have been?

That date makes it my oldest rifle. First one in the 19th century.
Anyone have any idea what it would be worth? I've never seen one for sale before. And no, it's not for sale.

I've bought and sold a few of those. That one started life as s MLM MkI (Magazine Lee Metford Mark I) I found .22 trainers to be a bit of a side line to collecting Enfield, so I never kept any of the ones I bought for very long. Value depends on conditions, marking on the stock, matching numbers and completness. Those ones I guess would range from $200 to maybe $600.

But if you plan to collect any thing Enfield, buy some good figging books (and read the damn things, and carry them with you to sales and auctions), or you could end up wasting alot of moolaa...

.22 trainer

Agree with Dean. Probably started life as a Lee-Metford (have to dust off "The Lee-Enfield Story). Most collectable, rarest of the trainers I'd say are the long barrelled versions. More common are the SMLE based No.2 MKIV* (I have 2) Either way, nice rifle. Out here on Vancouver Island where milsurps are rare it would fly off the table at $500-600 I'd say.
