What's involved in converting a #4 to 7.62mm? The besisdes the barrel and the mag, what else changes? Do the bolt and mag wells need to be modded too?

The bolt head is modified to allow the extractor to grab the rimless case. The bolt itself is the same. The mag should be modified, but not the well.

The new AIA has a recessed boltface with a plunger ejector. The converted No. 4s have an unaltered bolthead. The L42 and L8 series of repeaters used a 7.62mm extractor and a magazine with an integral ejector. The Sterling conversion had an ejector added to the left sidewall of the receiver, and a different magazine. Canadian and L39 conversions were single shot. Basically you need a barrel, magazine, extracxtor and, depending on the magazine, an ejector. For a single shot, only the barrel is needed. UK conversions had the boltheads proofed at a higher level than .303s.
The other consideration is why you would do such a conversion. Its an interesting project, if you can do the work yourself, but if you have to pay a gunsmith to do the work, by the time you have paid for a rifle, barrel, magazine, and labour, you would be better off to buy an AIA from Marstar or Wolverine. Your conversion could be hard to sell for the money you would have invested in it. I am sure you are aware that there is a difference of opinion whether it is a good idea to convert a No. 4 to .308.

FWIW, you can adapt an Ishapore 2A1 extractor to work on a No.4 bolt head. The Sterling and Enfield mags in .308 are like hen's teeth and expensive to boot.

Also, the ejector screw usually doesn't eject the rounds very well on the conversions, so the Enfield mag conversion is a better coice with its integral ejector.

At the end of the day, just put u pa WTB for a LB 7.62 conversion or buy an AIA. It will be cheaper for you.

Was contemplating a bubba #4 resto in .308, a little more involved than I hoped...
I haven't even looked at pressures or anything, can a #4 action take the load ok, or are there issues with pressures from a .308?

It can take 7.62 NATO pressures no problem. I wouldn't fire Hornady light mags in it though, and I would not load to the hotter end of .308 Winchester data.

Some people are less cautious, but I value my health...

There was a Cdn Arsenals 7.62 barrel on ebay a couple days back. Used, it still sold for around $270.

On the DCRA type rifles I have had, the extractor was the part that needed modification to work properly. A few seconds with a dremel on the inner edge of the extractor would allow it to travel a bit further, and grab the rimless case better. I replaced the ejecter screw as well with one slightly longer that problem was solved as well.
There must have been some of the sterling conversion mags in the Canadian Forces, cause I found 7 of them in one of the local surplus dealers sheds. Before anyone starts PMing, they are long gone.

All the DCRA conversions were intended as single shot therefore they did not feed or eject. One day I will finish my faster than #### sporter in a one piece stock but I will leave it as 303 to make life easy. Nothing wrong with 303.
