Enfield Barrel

'
The barrel threads on the Number 1 or Number 4 rifle are too small and would have to be cut off. Then, you still have a barrel that has a flat on top (the Knox form) and a very short tapered area. The bolt face would have to be opened up to accommodate the .303 case rim and the barrel would have to be rechambered. Add to that, the problem of getting the rounds to feed, and you are really into big $$$$$$$$$ for something that would not be that suitable or reliable.

If you want something in the AXIS line, why not simply buy a 30-06 or .308? You will be much happier, because to do what you asked about, even if you could find a Gunsmith that would do it and guarantee that it would work, would probably cost you twice what a new Savage Axis would cost.

I don't know why you want to do that, but if you just want to, then you can put an Enfield barrel on an Axis. Turn down the barrel, thread it again. Make a sleeve to fit. Thread it internally and put it on. Now, thread the barrel and install it in the Axis. Job done.

That being said, I agree, just buy the axis.

"...a Lee Enfield 303 barrel..." Unless it's a brand new barrel, you'd be wasting your time. And the Axis would have to be made for a rimmed cartridge with a similar diameter to the .303 or you'd have no end of issues. Plus magazine issues.

And of course a "Lee Enfield barrel" whether .303 or .308 is just a barrel of about .30 cal, of which a huge variety of dimensions, internal and external, are available these days.

Choose the rifling you want and then it's just a case of cutting the chamber you need to match.

Unless you want those particular sight and/or bayonet lugs, in which case make a sleeve from that part of an original barrel and sweat onto the new barrel.
