I'm looking for any info you may have on Enfield conversions to 7.62x54R. Is there a gunsmith in Canada known to have completed this conversion with good results?

Depending on how you wanted it done, i read you can just get the barrel rechambered in 7.62x54r
no setting the barrel back no changeing any other parts but the brass will have a double shoulder ( if you are using surplus ammo, the shoulder shouldnt matter) you just need a smith with a chamber reamer.

Ir you can get the barrel set back a turn or two to get the new chamber to clean up and no double shoulder. That would be a bit more work. But worth it if you plan to reload for the rifle.

Thanks. My main objective would be to take advantage of the much cheaper surplus ammo, so double shoulder would not be a problem.

Does anyone know someone who has done this conversion? Will the magazine need modification?

Surplus 7.62x54r is getting more expensive.

I reload for both calibres, and the prices for components are basically identical.

With the cost of the work, you may as well just buy a Nagant.

I have a Mosin and tons of cheap milsurp and hunting x54R ammo. I'd like to have an Enfield but i dont have access to cheap 303. So converting an Enfield is of interest to me. Plus it's cool, which is why I'm interested in firearms in the first place.

why ruin a Lee-Enfield. the Value on them keeps going up every year :) I only have a Enfield because its a canadian thing to do.

Want 54R get a SVT 40 and have fun.

Isnt 762x54r a tad warm for an enfield action?

The No4 actions seem to handle the 7.62x51 pressures very well and they are both in the same pressure range. You might want to consider doing this conversion to a butchered P14 Enfield instead if you're nervous.

Unless you know about a new batch of 7.62x54R coming up for sale anytime soon, I would seriously reconsider this conversion and spend the money on reloading equipment instead.

There was a time, back in the late seventies when you couldn't find 7.62x54R. People converted SVT 40s and Mosins to 303British. How times change.

The slightly larger rim diameter may give some extraction and feed issues as well.

You could convert a P14 as bearhunter says or the other action to do it to is a Siamese Mauser - use a P14 barrel, lots of meat on the shank to mill to correct thread. Ellwood Epps has the reamer and gauges to do it. Another thing to consider is a conversion to 7.62X39 - you have to cut almost all the threaded portion of the barrel off of a #1 or #4 barrel and then re-thread. If you google you'll find details on the conversion.

The alternative there is a Cooey Carcano using a #4 barrel - then you also have double set triggers but will need to put sights on the barrel or a side mount scope bracket as you will still need to use a stripper clip to load, though there is a guy on CGN who converted the mag well to take Norinco single stack mags for the bolt action Norc rifle in the same caliber. If you want to use 308 diameter instead of 311 bullets, get a 30 cal barrel to use for the conversion from a 308 rifle.

For something even more different - Numrich makes feed kits to convert M98 and M96 actions to 7.62X39 and you'll need an extractor blank to fit because of the smaller rim diameter. They also make (made) a threaded barrel but you'd have to get it imported.

Agreed with the previous poster for the cost of rebarreling you could get a Mosin and or an SVT40 and preserve your old rifle for when 303 is around again. Enfields are neat rifles but so are the other big surplus dogs on the market.

Svt40 is one of the nicest rifles you can shoot from the surplus collection , next to no recoil (mine are all 6 port muzzles) large effective round, some more accurate than others, plus in my opinion they have a cool factor above many rifles.
