My #4 extracts just fine, but unless I pull the bolt back very fast the case just plops onto the magazine follower or flips and lands there back to front.

Is it possable that the ejector screw is too short?

That would be my first guess. Can you give it an extra quarter turn? Not turning it too hard, just to see if it can go in deeper a little, maybe it's just not tight in?

"...ejector screw is too short?..." Have a close look at it. If it's worn, it should be obvious. Marstar is listing replacements at $7 each.

The ejector screw is only to ensure a loaded round is ejected, please watch the photos in relation to the ejector screw below.

Replace the extractor spring and your Enfield will eject just fine, read below. I replace the extractor spring and firing pin spring on all my shooters they get weak over time when compressed.

Real men don’t need no stinkin’ special tools to replace the extractor spring.;)

Ed beat me to it... a simple little spring is all it takes. Swap it out and you'll be good to go.

It's also nice to see you contributing here as well, Ed.

NOTE: I’m an American and five years ago two very generous Canadians from the old Gun Nutz forum gave me my first Enfield manuals the Canadian No.4 manuals and “Canadian Marksman” (they mailed them to me for free) thank you, thank you, thank you.

I then got lucky and found someone in the UK who had access to the old Military of Defense Pattern Room Library and I now have over six DVDs filled with British and Commonwealth weapons files and manuals.

If you go to badger website at the top of the page you will find many books and manuals that I and others have donated to the cause.
