Have a look at the pics, let me know if there is anything I can do to restore the front sight "ears". Looks to me to have been ground off for some unknown reason (tragically). The rest of this one is perfect/clean and i'd ideally like to return it to it's original state.
I'm not holding my breath that it can be done and don't flame me, I didn't do this to her. Thanks for your help/advice in advance.

Best to replace...you see the flash hider for sale $65 - 90.00 depending on condition. Tough to repair and most likely cost more than a replacement.

ya I see that Numrich has em.....2 pins to hold them in place.....
perhaps a silly question but what about brazing a couple ears back on?
thoughts.......

I can't comment about brazing as I have no experience. Might take a lot of effort to make it appear "factory", but if you replace it, it will be in factory condition again.

Maybe ten years ago there was a lot of factory rejects that came on the market, but since then they all seem to be investment cast repros and not very good ones. Numrich has them for $35. or so.

Yours could be repaired with a bit of skill, but you'd need good photos of an original to work from.

thanks for the replies/ideas...I've got a couple of highly skilled smiths in the area....i'll take it to them and see if they'd be up for the repair. Those replacement ones just don't excite me and i'd rather "try" than not.
cheers

I have the same issue with a No 5. And I bout the part your talking about from Numrich just waiting for them to arrive. Any sites with a guide on how to replace it ?

The reality is that it's just not worthwhile to spend much money repairing something like this: a mint No5 can be had for 5 to 600. Or find a junker and take the flash hider off it to replace yours.

It's already wrecked....but if the rest of the rifle is in collectable condition, and you have a competent smith....I'd say go for it.

Yeah, you'll probably end up with more into it than it's worth, but hell, at least you're TRYING to preserve a bit of history.

Much rather encourage this than read a post about what type of scope base to drill and tap for.

Well that's my issue....it's numbers matching, magazine, bolt, receiver.....the wood is superb and I would really like to save it if possible. i'll have it looked at and report back.

What to do, what to do, seems the thing your debating is repair the sight, buy a repro or hang in there and hopefully find a replacement part. I bet as soon as you braze repair the damaged sight within a week or so you would find a actual part. Here is a little trick I have had some great success doing vehicle restorations and trying to source that insanely hard to find part. Go on Ebay, find a vender or two that is "onto" what your needing and ask "do you have part ###X that I am seeking" you may have to ask around but someone, somewhere will have exactly what your seeking. As for repairing by braze thats all your call, and the gun is only "factory new" once so if you can do it and do a respectable job of it give it a shot.

brazing new ears on is bubba territory, no matter how well intentioned.

do nothing....or source a complete, period correct sight/flash hider and have it replaced
