Enfield Jungle Carbine metal cap ?

I have been looking at some enfield jungle carbines lately and have noticed two different styles. Some have a metal cap on the lower forend and some don't. Whats the difference? Are the ones without it bubbas? Which are more original?

I think the ones with out the nose cap are the earlier ones. The later ones were made after the war so they could probably put a little more into them such as the cap. Just watch out for converted No.4's, as there was a company that converted No.4 rifle in to jungle carbines. Some are so good you cant really tell the difference unless you take it to a Enfield expert.

I've got a wartime production No.5 (1945) and it has the cap on it.

Neither are bubbas and both are correct. The foreend cap observed on No5 rifles is original, the ones without are a wartime expedient later on during the war. However, stocks with caps were used again in post war assembly of rifles. Which could explain Skippy's No5. Also, I'm sure some mixing and matching has gone on in the last 60 odd years.

Both Faz and BSA did the same. Some with and without. As Vimy Ridge said "stocks with caps were used again in post war assembly of rifles."

I realize its N0.5, but I think most people on here would understand that Jungle Carbine means N0.5 Mk.1

And it's not a P17 nor M1917 it's a US rifle of 1917, and there's a difference between an ShtLE and a No1. They're reciprocating saws not sawzalls and water pump pliers not channel-locks. It's an automobile not a car, it's a dough naught not a donut, the H on Montreal's logo means Hockey not Habitants (they still suck however) and there is Pilsnser and Ale not just BEER!!!! But I guess we'll just have to cope with the ignorance rampant in the modern world and get on with our lives.

With all the knowledge available here can anyone tell me why the JC/No. 5 had the rear sling loop on the right side of the buttstock?

I aways found that uncomfortable...much preferred the K98 idea of the left side of the rifle.

Having the loop on the right side makes the butt hang closer to your body. The P1944 webbing issued with the No.5 has a special strap on the right hip. It fastens over the wrist of the rifle, and makes carrying the slung rifle easier. Personally, I think it is an abortion. It makes it impossible to sling the rifle across my back when dragging a deer. The German K98 system is stupid, too. As a left eyed shooter, I can't fire a K98 with the sling attached without getting a bloody lip. The Vz-24 has a better system than either the K98 or No.5 because it has swivels to carry it either way, and no annoying buckle on the right side.
