Enfield Mags that function with a cut off

Some poor dope has the wise idea to restore his Grandfathers 1916 Enfield. He put a mag cutoff in the mix. Lo and behold that wasn't so bright, the lips of the magazine don't clear.....

I tried my Metford mag and although it works, it is marginal with the cartridges not wanting to wait their turn and they all want to go to battery at the same time.

Is there a specific mag I should be after? I don't feel like modifying a mag and end up destroying it.

Thanks for your help!

The mag has always been in this rifle but there was no cut off in the slot before.
I saw an ad in the exchange of a 3 and 4 facing eachother and honestly without holding them on my hand I wouldn't be able to tell you if I have the right mag to begin with or not.
I'll post a pic here in a bit.

My rule of thumb for mag identification relates to the indents in the sides of the mag. The indents in a No 1 mag run all the way from top to bottom, passing through the floor plate. In a No 4 (and 5) mag, the indents stop just short of the floor plate.

Indents run all the way thru to the bottom.
Then you should have the correct mag. Long Lee mags have shorter lips and different followers than the No 1 mags, along with a couple other minor differences. However,in my experience, they are fully interchangable regardless of the cutoff used.

I think you have a cutoff for a Long Lee. The early cutoff will interfere with the front lips of the mag (but usually not enough to prevent use) and the proper cutoff for a No 1 will not interfere since it is narrower at the front to clear the lips. Could you post a photo of your cutoff? I have a spare correct No 1 cutoff and would be happy to exchange cutoffs with you. PM me if I can help.

I'll try to pull it out tonite and post a pic. From description maybe I do have a long lee cut off. It covers the front lip in closed position.
Thanks a bunch!

You don't have to pull it at this point. Remove the mag, open the bolt, close the cutoff and take a photo from the top looking down at the cutoff. That should give us all the info we need.

Yes, the Long Lee cutoff is different in that the later version of cutoff has a deeper cutout from the hinge screw/hole before the metal gets wider. That cutout area allows it to be used in all the mags subsequent to the early versions. I have a few extra - I can trade if you wish.

Took me a while to figure that out by trial and error

2 MkIIIs, top one has a MkIII cutoff, bottom has a Long Lee cutoff.

Strange turn of events boys,
When I inherited the Metford it had what now appears to be a cutoff for a later model Enfield like 5THBATT posted, as well as an improper mag. I managed to get a proper mag but never realized the cutoff was wrong for the mag till just now.

Looks like I do indeed have a long Lee cut off tucked into Grandads gun.

Going to try swapping mags in the guns to see how feeding works, and from there I will swap them rifle to rifle and should have it all in good form in no time.
Will keep you posted.

What out for these types of SMLE mags, they have a rotating front feed lip &if you try putting one of these in a Long Lee it will get jammed, the SMLE has a clearance groove for the lip.
