Enfield Maker's Mark AE - Interpretation Needed

My custom Enfield No. 5 .22LR has an AE for a maker's mark on the receiver wrist. Can anyone tell me what this means?

The only referenece I've been able to find points to South Africa... this is highly doubtful seeing as how the rifle has Canadian service markings.
 
Found another reference, A.E. Clarke & Co. They are gunsmiths in England. Perhaps they built the rifle and re-marked it without scrubbing the original WWII date. They only go back 28 years.

For all I know AE might be a really common maker, but no one's responded to this thread, so I'm continuing to think it is a mystery.
 
Here's the right thread.

If there's someone out there who knows quite a bit about enfields and has never heard of this marking, please let me know. Even an "I don't know" from an expert could be valuable.
