do magazines from a no.1 interchange with a no.4?

You can usually use no4 mags in a no1 but not the other way around, the no4 mag I have fits in my no1 mk3.

ok, that helps, I see there is a pair on the ee for sale, but they don't look exactly the same and the "latch" on the backs are quite different....

No 1 mags do fit and work in no 4 rifles, I've received several that way. It is not, however, ideal.

The "latch" as you say extends to the bottom of the mag on a no1 and half way down on a no4.

In your picture the left is a no 4, right is a no 1.
