How far is it sportered? Is the barrel cut? reveiver milled? If its just a simple backyard Bubba hacksaw stock job then its far from beyond restoration. If you do like gun building, I think you would like restoring it.
If the barrel is cut, and/or reciever screwed, then Their is no real damage in making it into soething you like. But if its only a stock chop job then, leave it be, restore it and give your freind a peice of history for his first rifle. But if you still insist, all I can say is
