Hi,
I am thinking of getting a few slings for my dads and my enfields. I was wondering, is it a good idea to actually use them or will the 60 year old canvas tear? I would also like to use it as a shooting aid but I heard the Enfield slings are not meant to be used as aids. If It is not a good idea to use the original slings, what would be a good sling that would still look close to proper but be useful. Thanks.

I don't know who told you that, but I still use mine consistently. It's still one of the most comfortable slings I have for a heavy rifle, and I always use it wrapped around my arm as a steady aid when off-hand shooting. Just look at the condition of the sling itself, but mostly check the metal end pieces to see if they've thinned out. The only problem I ever had was splitting of the end piece due to wear. There's my 2 cents worth.

Most Enfield web slings will still be serviceable when your grandkids are in paliative care. Yes, they lat that long - particularly the ones with brass fittings.

Buy one and abuse it. They were made for that.

tradex has NOS Danish ones that are extremely robust, and come with a cleaning kit for the low price of 10 or 12 bucks. Visually, they're virtually identical to WW2 Brit ones. For a couple bucks more, they have WW2 Brit ones!

unless there are rips or something on the sling, I would and do use them on my Enfields. I look at like, if they could survive North Africa, Normandy, Belgium and wherever else they might have been, I really can't inflict that much damage on it unless I'm completely daft. That is if is not torn or ripped like I said before.

I used to buy them for 99 cents and one was my main "carry-around" sling for my Remington Model 700 243 for years and one is still a guitar strap on my 2nd acoustic, my 1973 Yamaha FG150 six-string.

OK, one more question, Do the Danish Enfield slings from Trade-ex have brass fittings? What about the other Lee Enfield slings they have? Also, what would be a max price for a good to mint condition sling? There are some on Ebay and the EE for $25-35, I know the Trade-ex ones are only 10 and 12.50, but I would prefer brass fittings.

I atatch one to the middle swivel and then clip the loose end to the sling near the middle. The makes a loop. My arm goes through the loop and I have what target rifle shooters call a single point sling. Great for prone aimed shots.

Besides showing a bit of discoloration at the swivels from not moving for so long, the slings on 2 of my WW1 dated enfields (no doubt not the original slings unfortunately) are holding up very well.

I got a bunch from tradex. They're really nice, NOS, come with a cleaning kit (better learn how to wrap those pullthroughs!) and are priced right at 10 or 12 bucks.

Mine were WW2 dated, and I'm pretty sure they'll last another 100 years.
