Hi - I snagged an Enfield Sniper cheek rest off Ebay:dancingbanana:. It is a synthetic copy (not original) I got for my bubba sniper project. Anyhoo, now I need to mount it and I was wondering if you lucky sniper owners out there could help me out? I need to know how far up the stock to mount it. If someone could measure the distance from the back of the rest to the butt plate that would help me out. I also need to know if the rest is mounted at top center or if it is mounted off center a bit. Not sure how you would measure that, but any info or pics would be helpfull. Last and not least - this rest is not fully finished, the holes are drilled but not countersunk, and it needs to be sanded. I was wondering what type of screws were used (length and type) and how to go about counter sinking the screws....

The cheek rest is fitted to match the shooter. Put it to where the eye relief feels right for you. You may have to shave some wood (or in this case remove some plastic) to get a nice fit to the butt.

The screws are #8 wood by 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch long (the shorter one is on the front). Just drill 1/8 down on the pilot holes of the rest with a drill the diameter of the screw head.

The screws are slot drive, which is getting harder to find these days. If you check with a place that rebuilds/refinishes antiques, they usually have a jar or two of them. Heat the screw head with a propane torch and quench in a couple drops of oil to get a nice black finish onto it, or rub the hot screw head on an old woolen sock.

Adding to stencollector's excellent advice, I assume you're going to be doing a lot more for this project than just mounting the cheek rest. If so, check the Technical Articles for Milsurp Collectors and Re-loaders (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/forumdisplay.php?f=25

There's a library entry titled Blueprints and Specifications for the Enfield No.4 Mk1(T) Sniper Rifle (click here) http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=1623

Courtesy of "mudpuppy", they're MOD Pattern Room blueprints from the 1940/50's for the scope mount, pads, pad screws, thumb screws and cheekpiece.

Hope it helps... :)

I've installed several of these. I bought a number of repro cheekrests. My wife got good at installing them and I did the last one after she got fed up with it. Since the stock tapers they do need to be fitted. They should sit flush front and back, and tend to open up a bit towards the back. My wife used a crayon and moved it back and forth to show where it was contacting, then used a sanding drum set on a drill to remove material.

On my LB sniper, I measured on the top from the beginning of the buttsocket to the nearest center point of the cheekrest and got 3 inches exactly. On the buttstock I have in hand it's 2 5/8".

The holes can be countersunk with a larger bit size, drilling down just enough to put the screw head below flush and just wide enough so the screw fits in.

The slot head steel screws that came with the repro are 1 3/16" and 1 7/16" long, not including the head. The shorter one goes to the front, as the stock is shallower there, close to the stock bolt.

You should hold the cheekrest on the stock, open the bolt and make sure the bolt doesn't hit it which it will if it's too far forward. Then position it so that when you close your eyes, and put your cheek on it, then open your eyes, your eye is looking right down the scope with the reticle centred.

TOP THREE PICS ARE OF A REPRODUCTION I INSTALLED

Wow - you guys are a wealth of info. Thanks so much for the measurements and specs cantom. The crayon idea is genius! It fits almost as well as you example does now so it shouldn't take too much time to get right. I doubt this piece will take any stain, but I'll try to match it to my bubba, fingers crossed. I'll do some testing with my cheek weld and function test so the bolt doesn't whack it and then tape it down tight with masking tape and drill the holes. I'm a notorious screw overtightener though...anybody have any tips for adjusting the screws? Will a little bit of wood glue and tightening the screws "finger tight" (using only the index and two other figers to turn the screw driver) hold them in place?

The length of a flathead wood screw includes the head. So if ordering from a supplier, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 are the lengths to order.

It is important to watch that the screws, whatever length you do end up using, do not go into the hole where the buttstock bolt goes into, and the oil bottle is stored. Otherwise, you will have a bugger of a time getting either out.
