I'm currently entertaining the thought of building a "Tanker" out one of the new-production AIA no.4's. I can easily tackle the metalwork...however woodwork is not my specialty!. Can anyone tell me just how involved the woodwork is or simply point me in the direction of someone who can do the work for me? Thanks fellas.

Aggghhhh!!!

You're going to cut down an $800 or so new rifle???

Why?

Contact member Beater, he turns out a succession of extremely well built Tanker Enfields, using already sportered rifles with great bores. He's done a bunch.

Easy there Cantom, this is a sporting rifle not a piece of history we're talking about! :p
I already own a Tanker and really dig the balance and feel. I like them better than #5's even and think it would be even more versatile with all the modern extras the new AIA's bring to the table.
I'm not "bubba'ing" any originals, these are simply shooters to me. Nothing more, nothing less.

Better an AIA than a real no.4. Go for it. There are a couple of guys on here who turn out new made stocks, I bet someone can chop the lumber cleanly or turn out a newly made custom stock for you. keep us posted, I wanna see pics! Especially if it's 7.62x39 and has an AK mag.

What is a "tanker"? This is not a an actual military issue model is it? Same with the M1 Garand. Are these just fantasy alterations? As far as I know, tank crews carried pistols, stens, Thompsons, or plain old SMLE rifles. Never seen a "tanker" rifle that was used during the war.

Yep, they are just a cool fantasy rifle.

The issue I have is just changing an $800 plus tax plus ship rifle into...maybe a $500 one?

Better to do it to a $150 sporterized Enfield.

But to each their own.

I don't think anybody suggested it made economic sense, just that cutting up an AIA is much better than cutting up a rifle with historical significance.
