Hello again,

Well, after looking at my 30-06 the past while, I think that this may be a "forever" gun. You know the one you just won't sell because you like it so much? Anyways, I was thinking about getting the floorplate engraved with something simple, like my initials (C.J.), and when I took it to the engraver in town (Atikokan), she said that the metal was too hard to do? Is this true, or did she just not want to do it? I live in Thunder Bay now (somewhat) and there are engraving places in the mall. Would they do it? Or should I see a gunsmith for something like this? I didn't think it would be this hard, but if it is, please correct me :)

Cory

The rifle is a Sako L61R in case that matters

It really depends on what you are looking for. A good engraving is made by hand, with cold chisels. That is the state of the art. Now, firearms engravers are not legion today... and they're not cheap. There are also different methods, like etching, etc... it's all up to your own taste.
Some knifemakers are also engraving.

The metal on your Sako is not too hard to be engraved. You have not taken it to an engraver, you took it to someone with a machine that is used for engraving a brass plate for a trophy.

Ok, that must of been it. I know she does that, but I thought I saw an ad somewhere that said engraving, maybe I'm mistaken. So on that note, would it work going to a mall and getting it done at a Kiosk? Or would that not work?

If it's "forever" go with the diamond!

Don't go to the mall... find someone who's going to do a great job... really personal... special...

Engraving ones initials into the bottom metal should be done by an actual engraver, not a person operating a machine.

An engraver will free hand the lettering using hand tools. If you don't use a qualified engraver you can always use a piece of barbed wire and do it your self. :D

The completed project may have sentimental value for you or your family members but to anyone else you have lessened the value of the rifle.

"...did she just not want to do it?..." She'd have to have a firearms business permit and a PAL to do anything to a firearm. She couldn't legally be in possession of your rifle. Just the floor plate isn't the same thing though.
Putting names etc. on brass plates and trophy's is engraving. Just not the kind you want done. Forget the Mall. Look in the Yellow Pages under Engraving, call a few and ask about engraving steel.

Drop the floorplate in a bubble envelope and mail it to one of the excellent gunsmiths that frequent CGN.
Postage should only be about $2.

?

I have known many gunsmiths over the last 50 years... only one did engraving... it is not something that a gunsmith would commonly do.

Ok, I'll look up an engraver in the phonebook when I get back to Thunder Bay. When I brought the floorplate to get it engraved by the lady, it was just the floorplate, not the entire rifle. I know it will be lessening value, but I don't plan on selling this rifle. Thanks for the help :)
