Know it might not fall under gunsmithing, but figured I'd give it a shot. Looking for a place in Chatham area, so Sarnia, Windsor, London triangle, that can engrave something on the barrel of a gun. Anyone know a shop that would take that on?

"...might not fall under gunsmithing..." Sort of does. Forget any trophy shop. They usually can't do steel. The biggest problem is the Firearms Business Licence any place that handles firearms is required to have. I'd ask in your local gun shop.

A barrel is just a steel tube. Still not a job for a trophy shop.
Depending on which rifle, getting the barrel off and back on again involves having the proper tools. A barrel vise and action wrench, plus headspace guages. Expensive for a one time thing.

A slide isn't a barrel, but it's not the registered part of the pistol either. Look in the Yellow Pages under Engravers and call a few. Trophy shops will still not be able to do it though. Nor will a 'mall' engraver. You need a place that engraves steel. That may be an issue in Chatham.
Call Goble's and ask if their smithy does it or knows a place. Be sure and make it clear that it's just the slide and not the whole pistol or you'll get the 'You need an ATT for that.' lecture. For their London shop: (519) 455-4277 dave.gobles@rogers.com
