Enjoy Labour Day Weekend with 12% Off Storewide!

I have over 2500$ worth of reloading equipment in my cart

Went to check out and pay

I was horrified to see you charge 12% tax to BC residents

It should only be 5% GST

Why are you charging the full 12% ?

What gives?

Retailers that charge the destination tax rate must remit the provincial tax to that province such as BC. Since most out of province retailers are not registered in other provinces, they may charge but they do not actually remit the tax. Just ask the retailer to show you their PST registration number and you can easily check that number with the province. The out of province retailers that I purchase from only charge the 5%. Check around and buy from retailers that only charge the 5% and save yourself $$.

According to the cfib, retailers must collect all taxes except for sales to Alberta and all territories. However the BC government says you don't have to collect if you ship products out of BC. Confusing.

I'm from sask and pay only gst to all retailers outside of Sask. In Sk I get charged pst. There is another sponsor that tried charging me pst on a sale and they are based out of ontario. They could not provide me with a sk pst # and offered to take the pst off the sale. I canceled my order and have not shopped there again.

I gotta look into this. There's a certain dealer in Sask where I've paid them over $300 in PST over the past year and I'm from Manitoba.

To easily solve this issue, each vendor should post their provincial tax numbers in a "Sticky" at the top of their own personal forums.
I too am now wondering if a certain vendor has been collecting non required tax amounts.

Deleted my comments as...Sorry,,don't think this should be discussed in depth in a specific vendor area.

Yeah check into it. I'm not familiar with Manitoba but unless they have a MB pst # they should not be charging you pst. Even when I order from retailers in hst provinces I do not have to pay hst. I'll confirm with my accountant again since the government is always looking for ways to tax us more but he was the one who pointed me in the right direction with the issues I had before with the retailer I spoke of

If a business collects BC provincial tax, it must be registered and has a BC government issued PST number. Otherwise, there is no obligation or ways for the business to remit collected provincial taxes. This should be true for all provinces. Most out of province retailers are not interested in incurring the extra time and cost to design their website to collect and remit all provincial taxes across the country. Here's the BC website that you can verify if a retailer is BC PST registered: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/sales-taxes/pst/exemptions If any retailer can't/won't provide you with a registration number, I would ask more questions. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, for transparency, the retailers should post or list the provincial registration number for all the provinces that they are collecting for. Btw, I'm an accountant.

Hmm interesting discussion on PST topic. I also tend to shop around and choose to give my business to shops who only charge 5% tax if they are not HST province and if I have a choice.
