Alright we all have to start somewhere, and sometimes there is a limited budget. Give your experiences with affordable shotguns that are worth the purchase. Pump, Semi, Double whatever.
A few years ago got into Goose hunting and wanted a Semi-auto. Bought a Weatherby SA-08. Great gun, and probably one of the cheaper Semi-autos.
Cheers

Mossberg Maverick 88 - one of the cheapest pump shottys. Think I paid $250 shipped for a brand new one back in the day from a site sponsor.

I see em at Walmart in the states all the time for $179. Over 5,000 rounds through mine, fell to the bottom of a creek, and who knows what else and it still shoots amazing.

You can't have this discussion without the Remington 870 Express. I just bought one for 359 then a 50 dollar rebate after that so all in it cost me about 350 and it shoots everything I put through it with great accuracy. It didn't like to eject the Cheap winchester #7 I had bought but loved everything else so far. It is also greatly accurate. With the bead sight I've been grouping well at 75 yards and couldn't be happier with the performance.

The best part of owning an 870 though is the ENDLESS accessories and options you can change to make it exactly as you like it. Once I'm done with my mods I think it'll earn a permanent home in the collection.

This is no different than the what to buy as my first gun posts. There are a million of them on here.

Everyone's opinion is 100% different. Buy what fits you not what someone else suggests.

Pretty much. By the time the thread ends every gun under $500.00, especially when dealing with all types of action, will be mentioned.

Want a magnum 10 gauge 00 buckshot distributor that will not break the bank?
Ruko single shot imported from Italy in the late 1980s.
The chamber will probably require a little polishing, otherwise it's just fine for launching 1 7/8s ounce shot loads.
Superbly light, with superbly heavy recoil.
Steel shot you say?? Needs some work then.

I have been very happy with the Winchester 101 DU Pigeon Grade O/U I purchased 26 years ago. Very well made and reliable. Tens of thousands of rounds later never an issue. For all those who say "yes well I am not laying out a couple K for a new gun, based on my purchase price the gun has cost me $76.92/year to date! Pretty affordable in my books.

How many gun owners have bought a gun that ended up sitting in the safe? People with limited experience and limited dollars need each purchase to be the right one. I wish I had the experience some members here have, because I'd share as much of it as I could.

870 express w/ 26 or 28" barrel. $359 at Wholesale, and with the mail in Rem rebate for $50, came to $309!
Weatherby is PA-08 is nice too, and has chokes supplied with it I believe.

Bought myself a Mossberg 535 (same as a 500 with 3 1/2" chamber) quite a few years back now, was the first firearm I had ever purchased on my own. I think back then it cost me $375 or something like that, and has been reliable as all heck. I had a single malfunction with it where the mag spring jumped itself when loaded with 3 1/2" shells and it failed to feed from the magazine. Other than that one time, every time I pull the trigger, it goes bang. Not too bad of weight either for a 12 gauge!

He only advice and experience that matter is "Pick a gun that fits properly". Makes absolutely zero sense to buy what someone else bought. We are all different sizes and fits.

Learn how to fit a shotgun properly this will save you the mistake of buying the wrong first gun just because someone else recommended it.

+1 on getting a properly fitted shotgun!

The mossberg I mentioned earlier doesn't fit me quite right, while okay and still comfortable to shoot and hunt with, my eyes where opened when I started trap shooting. With my Mossy, I would only hit 13 out of 25 clays on average. My buddy had a Hatsan over/under shotgun with him one day at the range and told me to give it a try. First round with it, hit 22 out of 25. Second round 24 out of 25. I bought that shotgun off him a week later.

Other than of course trap guns I have had with adjustable combs, adjustable lop buttpads and adjustable poi ribs the best fitting and hitting gun I ever owned was an old model 12 that I customed completely starting with heading to a good friend and gunsmith with and spent a day filing and fitting and shooting until that gun fit me as if it were a part of me. That was by far my deadliest duck gun ever. I wore my waterfowling clothes and had that gun tweeked to fit perfectly in field dress.

the old days when gun were made by true craftsmen. Now, firstly, your gun although it exists, it will not be as the one you own now...

Recently bought a benelli nova. It's hard to adjust getting over traditional wood and steel. But it grows on you and it seems tough as nails, almost impervious to weather. Super easy to disassemble and clean with no tools other then the magazine tube cap for take down.

I had a Maverick 88 back in the day w/28" barrel when I lived most of my time out on the logging roads. Road in the truck at all times. Was fun to just bust out and shoot some random ####. I traded it to my brother for a closed port Husqvarna 366 Chainsaw. He then traded it to someone else for a Mig Welder. That's just how #### works out in the rural country. The only use money has is to buy beer. Now I'm married, living in the big city, with a daughter on the way, working a city slickers job. Oh how life has changed. I remember being ####ed up on mushrooms wondering around the logging roads in the middle of the night. Like #### dude the trees were talking to me and telling me to go this way.
