Entry level bolt action.

Ask Gatehouse about his Stevens 200 (in 223). For the money, these are a great deal. I have one in 7mm Rem Mag and I am very pleased with the results so far.

For those reading this thread who don't already know, the Stevens 200 is the Savage marketed under a different name. It comes without the accutrigger, and at a much lower price. Between these two brand names you should be able to find something that fits your needs perfectly, at a price that will allow you to save money for good optics.
 
Savage. But really, buy whatever, if it sucks buy something else. Used guns sell at very close to new prices as evidenced by some of the crap you find in gun shows and classified ads and they all seem to sell. Half the fun of this stupid obsession is owning all kinds of cool toys. Good luck in your quest.
 
I handled a remington sps... bolt felt like it was full of sand... :(
The Vanguards were a decent buy before they starting pulling all the really accurate ones off and selling them for more money as Sub MOA's... :roll:
Stevens seems like excellent value... and has caught the attention of some knowledgeable shooters here 8)
I still think that the Tikka T-3's are worth the few dollars more... dependable, great features, outstanding accuracy, and they don't break the bank :idea:

I'm inclined to buy at least two or three guns......obvously different calibers but more than one guns no less. Must be a guy thing. Given that the weak point in this equation will obvoiously be me it's likely going to come down to looks and feel for my first rifle. If it doesn't fit the bill I guess I'll just have an excuse to buy another one won't I?

But it's a gunnut thing, not just a guy thing. We've got some females who share the addiction too. ;)

If the Tikka fits you and your budget, as BIGREDD pointed out, it is an excellent rifle - and it should hold it's resale value quite well too. I tend to automatically look at a lower investment cost when I hear the words "entry level", which may not be your main concern. Can't go wrong with the Tikka.

Just don't buy a rifle that is so expensive that you will have to put lower quality mounts, rings and optics on it. The rifle is only as good as the weakest link, and a lousy scope can really cripple it's performance.

Tikka $700
Remington sps $650
Vanguard $500
Savage $500
Stevens $350

I too think the Tikka is a fine rifle. I would almost consider the Tikka a notch or two beyond "entry level" though.

Remington SPS sells for $500 matte no clip.
