A farmer said if we rid him of his flying rat problem he'd allow us to hunt his land. We tryed 12 gauge loaded with 71/2's but the noise is an issue. Would a .410 be quieter or would a .22 cb penetrate the barn roof. We are looking at killing them all then sealing of the hay loft. Any suggestions?

Yup, sounds like you need the professional services of a "Falconer" of which I is one. Contact the falconry association of your province. They may even do it for free. Gives our birds a good work out.

1000 ft/sec air rifle... Nice and quite... Usually the others stick around to get shot too!!! One summer I did over 100 pigeons in with an air rifle...

I've had a similar request at a Hutterite colony. My mission was to shoot the pigeons out of the pig barn. I used .410 #8 1/2 Federal target load. Not too noisy and easy on the furniture. They were very happy with the end results. :)

gitrdun.

Its my experience even those high powered air rifles put holes in the barn roof...which father...or other farmers don't like. you can knock'em down with a regular air rifle and they will eventually get the idea. They are a pain in the ass and because of the need for ventilation in most barns they'll find a way in. The falcon idea is a good one too.

good luck

I agree with the pellet gun fans. The 700 to 800 fps range with lighter domed pellets won't go through newer tin or quonset sheathing but rusted tin is pretty weak. I used to go into the barns with my brothers and shoot what I could and my uncle would bat cleanup outside with his 28ga. One other trick, not well suited to larger birds though, is set up a bicycle wheel and motor in front of an access window and go scare the birds out. If you remove the right number of spokes, it might work on pigeons. I guarantee it works on sparrows. Just put a tarp under the window to gather up the mess, or call the dog over.

CB's will even punch holes through roof steel.

I've used a Diana 24 very successfully - I find the domed pellets are most lethal. The Crosman 'Hunting Pellets' work great too. They say they're pointed but the point is rounded off for a good combination of penetrating ability and punch to knock them out.

GOOD LUCK !!! - SD

denydart, reminds my of my younger days.we never did that one but we used to come up with some pretty good idea for fun.

For the rats I would just scare them out and shoot them with a 12.is it the noise in the barn that is a concern or outside scaring livestock?

I shot 16 in the barn the other night, I used a pellet rifle and a flashlight. They won't generally fly outside after dark and you can get em all in one go round. I've used the 22 shotshells, but found that they are pretty unpredictable and you need to be close.

.22 shotshells will work.... at 10 ft or so.
CBs are great but will poke a hole in the roof (steel, wood should be safe)
Pellets at 1000fps are louder and more powerful than CBs
Pellets at about 500 work pretty good.

BUt a little FYI, pigeons will not fly in the dark and can be easily caught in a net.

You could also get them going to a corn pile and net them with a 2X4 frame with chicken wire set up on a pull string.

soak some Pigeon Corn in vodka and let then fill their craw for an hour or so .... then let the hounds loose!!!

Best idea yet :D
Take griffs advice on the falconers though....and bring a video camera :) Been there, done that, and it is INTENSLEY cool to watch!

If you just HAVE to shoot them, stick with sub 500 FPS airguns, and learn to head shoot. The CBS, shorts etc. will stuill punch through the roof. Alternatively, load up some shotgun shells with cat litter or grain....it'll do the trick.

You can either 1: get a couple of cats 2: get some .22 shotshells which will work at 10-15 feet and won't damage the roof if you shoot them upwards or 3: drop a sack of corn in the middle of the barn, stand in a dark corner with a .22 and cb long and fire away as they come to land (preferably with some sort of backstop at the other end, or leave the door open if downrange is safe). A 500 fps pellet rifle works also at ranges up to 30-35 feet, use those flat "wad cutter" pellets and put the pellet in backwards for maximum effect.

I use a .22cal pellet @ 1050fps to knock them off the top of elevators. Too much for indoors, but lots of fun.
