I'm contemplating getting either an Acog with mounted RMR reflex site or an elcan specter DR for my XCR. I'm also very aware of whats on the EE.

Which optic has better ergonomics espesially with regards of the mounted reflex site on the Acog? Do you lose your cheek contact when viewing through the reflex site because its mounted on top of the Acog?

On the Specter DR, how well does the 1x setting compare to areflex site in terms of eye releif, seeing through with both eyes open...etc.

Thanks guys.

And to the mods, wasnt sure if this post should have been in the optics section. Sorry if any inconvenience is caused.

My vote goes to the elcan. Ergonomics it wins by a landslide, I found when trying the RMR mounted on top the Acog you lose all cheek weld and made shooting awkward. That being said, the 1x on the Spectre isnt a true 1x, it's more like a very subtle 1.1-1.2x mag but isn't very noticeable and it doesn't take getting used to.

ACOG and RMR...you barely raise your cheek above the stock to acquire the dot. Let's be realistic guys, if it's going on a .223 it's not going to kill you by raising up to see the dot.

While I have never owned an ACOG, I have looked through a few and am glad I am a Specter addict.

The 1x function of the specter feels very similar to looking through a red dot tube, and provides generous eye relief. Eye relief only becomes tighter on the higher magnification setting. Honestly, don't look at the Specter DR if you can't afford it, because you will be hooked after trying it. I am now on Specter #6. Lol

yall got any more them specters?

I own 1 specter dr and 2 acogs, 3.5x chevron, 4x crosshair
acogs are faster with both eyes open
elcan is clearer

the 3.5 acogs have good eye relief but are heavier and longer
the 4x acogs have the same eye relief issue as the elcan

that being said my elcan has always been mounted while there has always been an acog in the spare parts bin

rmr are good, but youre looking at a 3.5 moa dot, the elcan has a 1.5 moa dot.

im looking at a specter tr 1-3-9 right now, ill probably buy it in a couple of days. so thats a testament to elcan if ever there was one.

the quality of the glass on elcans is the same as a swarovski, blues are blues.

if you want to try them let me know and we can meet at abby

elcan specter dr is on iur
acog 3.5x is on tavor
acog 4x is on acr

You need to try both. They both have advantages. Both are fantastic. Its going to come down to what feels right for you. I train with both, and its a toss up for me. Just tools for a job. Try both somehow. ( maybe buddies at the range. 2000$ is alot of $$ to not try both)

I just mounted my Elcan Specter TR 1/3/9x 7.62 (#6) on my MH last week, only other person that I know of having one yet is gadget, and I sespect it is for some mil/leo trials that he is involved in.

I just need to zero mine!

6 of them? Dam, your hardcore!

Maybe. I did sell one though. #4 was a DR 1.5/6x 762 and I didn't like it for my MH. The rest are DR 1/4x and one TR 1/3/9x that I have to zero yet. The TR and one of the DR's were bought brand new, the rest have been ee deals, into them all landed for just over 9k, so for 5 quality optics its not that bad when you look at the price of the TR. :)

how heavy is it?

been thinking of getting the 556 one and putting it on my mk12

No you're 100% right that its not going to kill you, but comparing it to the spectre, its definitley a detractor for the acog.

thats corect, also you dont want to develop two different shooting cheek positions, it should be 1 position always, i never put a rmr on my acogs i just use the bindon method, works fine.

I'll preface this by noting that I have three different Elcans (OS3, OS4, and SpecterDR) and a TA11 ACOG.

If you need the 1x, then I'd choose the SpecterDR over the ACOG - the 1x Elcan setting is far superior to the red dot mounted above the ACOG.

If you're spending most of your time using it as a magnified optic, then I'd say the edge goes to the ACOG - the eye relief is roughly the same, but is much more forgiving if you're farther from it than you should be.

Of all of my optics, my favorite is the TA11. That being said, I haven't really liked other ACOGs I've tried.

I would encourage anyone looking at the Specter DR to look at the Specter OS4. Smaller, lighter, better reticle and it is cheaper. If you want the RDS you can mount one on top just like the DR and ACOGS. In that form the OS4 is the optic that has replaced the ACOG operationally and is replacing the remaining SUSATs in British service.
