Ok, picked up one of the arca rail forend adaptors for my ESS chassis from MDT.

Included with the rail are 3 screws with which to screw the rail to the chassis, as well as two smaller screws, which I assume you can use to screw things to the small tapped holes running along the rail.

Problem, the 2 smaller screws don't actually thread into the small tapped holes. Disclaimer, I'm a machinist, so while I appreciate that doesn't mean I'm not an idiot........I do know how to screw something into a threaded hole ;)

Edited -

It appears that the tapped holes are either a much finer pitch, or they are cross threaded (leaning towards this), but they are definitely not 6-32* :( . Sigh.

Anyone run into this? these holes were tapped in a cnc machine.......so if my rail is bad....there must be other bad ones out there

Ya, I've sent them an email.

I know they'll fix the problem.

Just a little disappointing. I seem to have bad luck with MDT products :(

Something just occurred to me; my ACC Arca rail has what I think is a stopper screw to keep things from sliding right off. I would have to look again but there might be several holes to limit movement of an accessory once you loosen it up.

The threaded holes in the "arca" rail (it's actually built to RRS' dovetail spec) are supposed to be threaded 6-32. They're so you can put small stopper bolts in their so you can butt them up to whatever you are clipping on there (tripod, bipod, etc) so it can't slide under recoil.

got calipers out. The screws are 6-48, but the holes appear cross threaded.

I got one of the screws to thread into a couple holes, but you could feel it wasn't right

Anywho, we'll see what MDT says

You can't bat 100 all the time. The important thing is how they handle it. My favourite companies to deal with are the ones where something has gone wrong and they've gone above and beyond in trying to rectify it.

Please send us an e-mail and we will happy to look into this for you. It sounds like the wrong screws were sent by mistake, should be a super simple fix!

I sent an email yesterday.

The screws are correct (assuming they are supposed to be 6-32), the holes appear cross (double) threaded.........almost like the tap cycle got run twice but the machine didn't orient the spindle the same both times
