I dont have a chronograph yet. If anyone is shooting a 308 with a 24" barrel, 175 smk's with re-15(44.5) how fast are they moving?

Please only that bullet and powder. I am guessing about 2650-2700 but I am probably high.

I did a crap load of seaching last night and looks like I should be in around that 2650 to 700 mark. Of course this will eventually have to be verified with a chrono. I just had to make up a balistic table in my itouch. Hopefully waste less ammo today.

Alliant doesn't list a 175 grian bullet. However, a 168 runs at a max of 2,710fps. A 180 at 2,613fps. A 175 will max out somewhere in between. Note that these are max loads.
There's a guy on Reloader's Nest who is getting 2400fps with a 175 SMK, using RL-15. 26" barrel though.
Max loads of IMR4064, BL-C(2) and IMR4895 give around 2700fps.
Just remember that a Matchking is not a hunting bullet.

Nope that is bang on for velocity, looked back on my savage rifles for old 2003 data,

Middle of summer (Hot) July 21-2003 chrony avg of RL-15 around that charge (45.0 gr)was 2673 with a 175 gr SMK.

Plus 2008-2009 data for my 700 was right around the same but again June-2008 data and july 2009 data (testing loads thats all)

I would go with 2640 for your ballistic cards that should be close, plus it is alot cooler. I recall some numbers shot in teh winter that I did not record for some reason, but were much lower.

I now use Varget, it does not move much fps wise when the temp changes

Let us know what it was when you chrony it.

here's how I estimate the speed.
at the range, I point a laser pointer just over the 100m target on the 200m one.
Place the 200m target, mark the red dot and then place another target a bit high at 100m and mark the pointer again.
My rifle is zeroed at 100m and pretty accurate so after shooting a 3 hole group I can measure the bullet drop of the group centre and by playing a little with a ballistic software I find out what muzzle speed gets that drop.

Federal has free downloadable ballistic software.

I have never reached 2700fps with 180s in my 22" barrel, in fact have found it hard to acheave 2600, most of my hunting loads are in the 2550fps range.
I would like to point out the accuracy of most chronys should be questioned.
I have checked mine against two others of the same brand & model by putting two chronys back to back & firing thru them both. What I found was the newest Chrony was almost 100fps faster than mine & another buds. The other buds averaged about 25 fps faster than mine & his had been sent in for recalibrating. So now my neighbourghs 270 is consistantly 75fps faster than my 280 till we switch chronys in which case the 280 is now superior (not that is wasn't always superior to the 270:p)

Hey I know where that picture was traken on your avitar lol!

Look out , over a nice big lake lol!

Put up a target up at a measured 300 yards, and shoot a group with your normal zero. The velocity can be worked out by comparing your actual bullet drop with the bullet drop calculations from a ballistics program that includes your specific bullet and allows you to enter the atmospheric conditions that were present when you fired your group and the height of your sight above the bore.
