ethics/legal question

BC must be different. Migratory birds are the same all over Canada, but for local BC game, including birds and big game, the legal shooting hours are from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.
I knew this, because it was this way in 1946, when I first started hunting in BC. However, it took a bit of searching the regulation synopsis just now, to find it.

It's illegal to discharge a firearm from the time between 1 hour after sunset until 1 hour before sunrise. I'm pretty sure that's a federal law, Canada wide(unless you're native/first nations, then it doesn't apply as nightlighting is legal for them in many parts of Canada).

And what coffee shop did you hear that in?

We'll your pretty wrong.. each province has there own regs.. you should read them some time. Seeing as they apply every time you go hunting

Is it legal? Is it ethical? Are you hunting for food? Sport? Or you just want to shoot something locked in your spotlight at 15 yards? I am not sure why you are asking. Kinda take the skill out of the hunt, as well as removes the responsibility and knowledge/planning requirement to be hunting during safe and appropriate times, light, knowing your environment etc.....

I was told this by an RCMP officer some time ago. I know the regulations very well, don't assume I'm ignorant of the laws.

PS- Spell-check works, try it some time ;)

You obviously don't know the regs, even in your own province.. I'm not assuming you are ignorant.. your own post shows you are ignorant of your own hunting regs.

FYI. RCMP are not Conservations Officers.. just in case you didn't know.. a large percent of RCMP don't know the hunting regs (unless they hunt).

Manitoba Hunting Guide said:
Hunting Hours
Hunting and the discharge of any firearms is permitted only from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.

Edit:

As a hunter, it's your responsibility to READ your hunting regs and know them.. using the "I was told" excuse is not acceptable. If you are ever told something, you should be asking "where in the regs is this? please show me".. Also there are many Federal, Provincial, and local bylaws that apply to hunting, you need to know them all.

This has nothing to with hunting regs, it's supposedly a federal firearms regulation. There are no federal hunting regulations, as you should know.

I do know the Manitoba hunting regulations. Where in my posts do I show to be ignorant of them?

"Hunting hours- No person shall hunt wildlife between ½
hour after sunset and ½ hour before sunrise of the
following day."
M.R. 355/88; 194/90; 113/95

This is from the Wildlife Act, not the hunting guide. It doesn't mention discharge of firearm, but obviously it's to cover archery as well.

you obviously have never hunting migratory birds then.. they are federally regulated, and have federal hunting regulations.

ok genius, here's the link to the Manitoba Hunting guide..

http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/wildlife/hunting/general/misc.html#hours
Hunting or the discharge of a firearm is prohibitied from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise. Refer to the sunrise/sunset information for specifics.

From the Manitoba Hunting Guide:
"This guide is a summary of the wildlife regulations. It is neither a legal document nor a complete collection of the wildlife regulations.
It is meant to be a convenient reference only. While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, some errors or omissions may
have occurred. For additional information consult the nearest Manitoba Conservation Office or telephone 204-945-6784 in Winnipeg
or 1-800-214-6497."

The Migratory Birds Convention Act is not a hunting regulation.

I can't find anything about a federal law prohibiting discharge of firearms at night, so myself and the cop were wrong, my apologies.
