Great video and highly recommended to watch. His story about Dr. Spaulding and how designers were selected from a pool of employees and not automatically slot graduate mechanical engineers into the designer role was fascinating and forward-thinking.

A neat thought, 2 of the most successful family of modern infantry rifles were designed by individuals who were not mechanical engineers (AK & M16). While the least successful modern infantry rifle was designed by an entire team of mechanical engineers (L85)....
