Since my father is retired now, he spends most of his free time either hunting or planning his next hunt...
This year, he travelled to Greece to try his luck at wild boar hunting. The area of Southern Greece that he hunted was mostly mountainous with only a few terraced farmfields. Good hounds are essential as most of the hunting takes the form of drives.
The old man managed to harvest a good-sized boar on the last hunting day. The boar (second from the right in the pic) was weighed at 65 kg. field dressed. Weapon used was a Browning A5 shooting Federal, 3", 000 buckshot.

Both of you guys hardly deserve the 10 minutes it would take me to modify a picture using Photoshop... Go back to your "Where's Waldo" books, kids...

Yorgi, good for your old man, and a nice trophy. I am curious about the hunt. Did he take his A5 with him, or was it provided by the hunt? Was the buckshot mandated, or is that your fathers load of choice? I kind of have visions of chasing after boar with a 45-70 lever gun, and wonder whether the Greeks would allow that.

Thanks Sharptail! The A5 was a loaner from a friend, he could have taken along a shotgun but it would have been a hassle for a three-week stay.
Unfortunately, the local authorities don't allow anything but shotguns to be used on boars.

The ownership of centrefire rifles and handguns is prohibited in Greece, kinda like the way WE will end up if the sheeple in OUR country vote for the Lieberals again! But I digress...

Most of the shots are at running boar, so buckshot is the ammo of choice. I hope I've answered most of your questions, PM me if you have any more.

I believe it was a Capstick book I have a home that has a good read in it about this guy that would hunt boars with a spear and sometimes just a knife in his hand! Don't remember if he used hounds or not but man, there's alot of bacon runnning around there. I wonder if one could use a smoothbored bp in something like a 4 bore. That would be classic.

Thanks for the pics Yorgi! I need to talk to your Dad about my retirement plans, he sure looks like he has alot of years to go hunting yet! :) Good for him!

Noel

Thanks Monty!

They used up to five hounds and the hunting party consisted of up to ten people. The little guy is new to the game, the experienced hounds were too tired to make it for the photo session...

All members of the hunting party have a two-way radio and on some days the hounds tracked/chased boars to a distance of 10 km !
It wasn't uncommon for the boars to slip past the posted hunters. When this occured, everyone just gets in their truck, follows the barking hounds and tries to estimate the next ambush site.

Nice Boars Yorgi... we used to be able to hunt them in Ontario... until the idiots in OFAH helped the Gov't take away the game farms.
OFAH sucks... liberals suck.

They're Jag terriers for #### sakes not rotweilers.
About the same size as a jack russell. Scaling issues?
C'mon, know your dogs guys!!!!

That is damnable cool looking.

Congrats to your dad.:)

Are those hummers as mean as what I read about?

Thanks Mumptia!

Being new to this type of hunting, my father was "strongly advised" by the experienced guys to stay clear of well-worn boar paths. No-one in their party has had the misfortune of dealing with an angry boar, not so for the poor dogs however...

It's not unusual for the dogs to corner a boar and get a little too close to the tusks. On the first day they were out, two of their best hounds were gored and had to be taken to the vet and get stitched!

I watched it on TV once and it looked pretty cool.

A hand gun in .30.30 would be the answer for me. :D

Now if we can just get those god dam Liberals out and shake some common sense into the drama queen Harper.............. Then I'd mount a nice Leupold on it.:p
