Took my boys out last Tuesday for an after school shoot. The oldest can hunt for the first time next year and is starting to ask more and more questions when we're out now.
The boys looking goofy.
Beautiful evening. Not quite duck weather.
It started slow.
Poacher finished the night with a great retrieve on a diving Gadwall. It took well over 10 minutes of chasing it in circles before he tired it out enough to grab it. He's thinking, "Put the damned camera away and get me in the boat."
5 bluewings, a spoonie
, a wigeon and a big gaddie. We were done early and I was able to get the kids home before dark -- so mom was happy too.
Saturday morning a friend came out from the city for his second duck hunt in his 60 plus years. We set up on a long narrow lake after first light (7 ish) and were done by 10 after 8. Our shooting sucked for the first 15-20 minutes but then we hit our stride and kept Poacher busy. All the mallards and pintails pictured are drakes but you can see how varied they are in coloration right now.
5 mallards, 3 pintail, 4 bluebills, 3 bluewings, 1 greenwing
It's been a good season so far.
