evening hunt techniques for turkey

Through my experiences, the evening hunt is reliant on knowing where the turkeys move to and from during the day. If you're hunting private land, do some scouting. Find a roosting tree. Look for droppings, tracks, dusting areas and feathers.
I'll usually set-up in an area where i can see a long distance and have scouted birds on earlier evenings. If you know where the roosting tree is, set-up 80-100 yards away where you've seen tracks heading in the opposite direction from the tree. You dont wanna spook the birds and ruin your next morning's hunt. Also, remember the hunt ends at 7pm. Turkeys usually hit the roost in the final minutes of daylight.
As for decoys and calling, put a jake facing you behind a single hen as if to breed. It worked for me last year. Im still learning calling techniques for the evening. Contentment purrs and soft yelps maybe, play it by ear.

99 % of the time, less calling is better. Add that to a great amount of patience and you will eventually have a shootable bird.
