I got a question for all you coyote hunters out there. Have you ever called in anything unexpected while hunting coyotes? Be it foxes, wolves, lynx, badgers, bears, wolverines or whatever...I wanna hear your stories! :D

Also, do any of you hunt other predators intentionally? If so, what calls do you use for various animals?

You call bears? Do tell!!!

Yeah....you can call bears. Those little bells that hikers wear?....they work :D

Anyhooo, when using a distress call for calling 'yotes, I usually get dive bombed by magpies...WTF  Until I read an article in a Predator mag where the author reported being swarmed by magpies also. Go figure?
Ain't it fun though.....:D

Calling for bears with distress calls can actually be very effective and the tactic has quite a following, especially in areas where baiting is illegal.

When I go predator calling,I'm not just hunting yotes.I have bobcats and fox in many of the same areas and expect to see any of the three respond to distress calls unless I'm howling for yotes specifically.Crows, hawks, eagles, owls, deer, fisher, feral cats are some of the non-targets I've called. As AB Boy said, when you're getting crows and birds of prey to come in,you're making the right sounds.Crows can be good callers for you at times. If crows come in and you can sit tight without getting busted by them, sometimes a yote or fox will come in to check out the racket.

That's a good point you make. If other creatures are reacting to your call, even though they may not be your intended quarry, it's a sure sign that you must be doing something right....so stay put and wait.

the way I figger it,a buncha crows make waaaaaay more racket than I could ever hope to.Gut a deer and the crows/ravens are the first to find it,which in turn attracts coyotes??I've gone so far as to intentionally set-up where I know there are crows and toss a bloodied rabbit out to keep them interested. The key is to have good overhead cover, like a big spruce, and don't even blink when the crows come, they'll spot you.Sit tight, let the crows do the calling, and see what else shows up?

The reason I posed this question is because here in Labrador we have lots of foxes, wolves, and lynx but no 'yotes! It doesn't make much sense as to why there aren't any around because they're in Newfoundland and in Quebec, so it only stands to reason that they'll eventually come here as well. But, so far I haven't seen or heard tell of a single coyote in Labrador. Maybe the wolf population is too high?

Anyways, I figured if calling in foxes, wolves, and such was a possibility I might be able to get a few good furs by hunting them instead of trapping. I just didn't know what calls I could use...but by the sounds of it any distress calls will probably work right? Anyone recommend a specific brand or animal distress type?

If your calling foxes, I like a flickertail distress call. I haven't called wolves before but I've heard fawn distress works well.

Yeah, once had a snowy owl come swooping in talons outstretched, he saw us about the same time we saw him and he missed my buddy Jeff's face by about 18 inches. Sure scared the #### out of us!!
