Was out on the quad today. Jumped 2 deer. They ran about 75 yards after. They stopped to watch us. We shut the bikes off to watch them. After about a min, one let out a scream like I have never heard from a deer. It started and stopped about 3 times, and lasted about 2 and a half mins. Only thing I could figure was there were a few more deer in the area that they figured they couldn't warn with their tails.

Any of you guys ever heard anything like that?

First time I heard a deer scream was when I shot it in the ear. It ran around rubbing it's ear on the ground screaming. Heard it many more times afterwards.

Does it count if they scream when you have to finish them off with a knife? Most terrible thing ive ever had to do :puke:
When they've been "harvested" efficiently and are dead when you go to retrieve them an hour later, its no biggie....but when you gut shoot em, and find them alive the next day, thanks to buddies that don't practice enough....
Should made the guy that shot it do the deed, then hed think twice.

I've heard one 'Bleat' and likely one scream ( probably not the right term...but quite apt I'd think ) that I've disremembered on purpose I'd think.
Not very nice; kind of why I'm a short range guy, less room for error.

The first deer I ever saw shot when I was about ten was a doe my dad knocked down but didn't kill with his 303. It bleated pathetically just before he cut its throat. It was sad but somehow didn't turn me off hunting.

In fact I felt pretty grown up when he asked me to carry the rifle back to the boat while he carried the deer out.

I have to euthanize injured deer frequently. When you have to move them first (such as when they're lying on pavement) they often scream, especially the fawns. It's pretty heartbreaking, and especially tough for the public who haven't seen it before. It's difficult to move a deer with 4 shattered limbs without causing it pain, but I sure do try.

jeeeezuschrist!

Screams, bleats, snorts, grunts, they do it all and I like to think I have heard it all but not likely.

They are way more vocal than most folks think, even heard young ones kind of grunting/bleating to each other in some type of play.

Yes, the scream from pain comes from deep dark places but not nearly as scary and the snorts that are right behind your blind that wakes you when you are dozing off!

Cutting a throat isn't like its portrayed in the movies, is it? The only time I've ever felt guilt killing a deer. Mine dropped at the shot in heavy cover at longish range. My mistake was hiking up to deer with only my fanny pack, expecting to find an instant kill. They do scream.

There is another way to kill an animal with a knife that is a lot more merciful than cutting its throat. Slip the tip of the blade into the spinal column between the skull and the first cervical vertebra.
I've not killed a deer that way, but it sure works on caribou.
Rather than using a knife, shooting it is likely a better option.
Only time I've heard a deer bleating was when one was hung up on a fence, and was hanging upside down. Cut the top strand with my Leatherman, and the deer bounced away.

I would just do a follow up shot if they're on the ground. I'd sleep better without hearing them scream.

I have never heard them scream but I have seen one bark like a dog as it ran down the field away from the wife and I. We came up over a knoll and it hadn't seen us (facing away from us) so we slowly walked toward it. When it saw us and ran it wasn't a one time bark but continuous till it was in the bush 100 yard away.
