Ever loose your rifle?

I was curious how many guys have lost thier hunting rifle while out hunting.

I have been lucky. I have come close a couple of times.

Some years back, I had my rifle on a green horse. I don't remember all the details, but we had some kind of problem and this horse takes off through the bush. When I finally catch him, there is no gun or scabard on him. I figured the gun was gone forsure. I got lucky and found it.

On a recent bison hunt, I was climbing a steep mountain with my snowmachine. The snow was deep and it was rough on the way up. I had my rifle in a leather scabard on the side of my machine. When I got to the top, there was no rifle. I went up and down that mountain several times with no luck finding it. I said to my partner, "one last time" and still no luck. My partner who was following me saw a piece of strap sticking out of the snow. I had driven over it about 3 times. The last time I drove over it, it kicked up part of the strap. I was happy to find it. The gun was undamaged.

My Partner has lost three rifles in the last 30 years. One from a horse that buggered off in the bush and a couple in a river.

I know some of the rivers in the Yukon have some exspensive hardware in the bottom of them.

So how about it, ever lost a rifle?

I've personally never lost a rifle in the bush, but a neighbour told me an interesting story he heard as a fishcop.

Two guys are out moose hunting and they come across a nice bull bedded down in a swampy area. The only vital shot available is the head, so one of them shoots it. It flops over on the spot, and naturally both men are elated. They go running up, and look over their fresh kill. It's a nice bull, and they want pictures before gutting it. The one who shot it puts his rifle on it's antlers as a size reference, and as they begin snapping pictures, the moose jumps up and runs away. Turns out, he shot it in the base of the antler and just knocked it out.

That's hilarious.....:D :D :D :D

One time when I was deer hunting back when I was in High School, I had borrowed my Dad's Ruger #1 45-70. I had a pellet pistol that I had also borrowed and I spotted a partridge walking through the hardwoods. I leaned my Dad's rifle against a tree and fired a shot with the pellet pistol and the partridge just kept walking. I took about 10 steps while reloading the pistol and shot again and missed and the partridge kept walking. I chased him for about 20 minutes and he finally flew. When I walked back to get the rifle, I couldn't find it. All the maple trees looked the same and I couldn't see the rifle anywhere. It took me 2 hours of walking around in that patch of hardwoods before I finally found the rifle. I was pretty embarrassed and I'll never do that again.

I taped my Ithaca up with camo tape... leaned it against a small bush while field dressing a deer.
After about 10 minutes of looking I started to acuse my buddies of hiding it.
I was getting pretty steamed and was about to start handing out black eyes when my Brother found it right where I'd left it about 15 feet from where I was standing. I felt pretty stupid... my buddies were merciless with me for a couple of years after that one.

Never lost it. But I sure did show up a few times at my hunting spot only to realize the only piece of kit I had left behind was my gun! Its #### like this that you "good" friends will never let you forget

Had two of my buddies in deer season put there rifles in a hard case and put them in the back of the truck for the ride down the road to the other wood lot, when they got there they walked to the back of their truck to see that neither one of them closed the tailgate abd the guns were gone. Must have been 20 guys drive down that road before they got back to my place to find them laying at the end of the driveway out on the road unscathed.

Same sort of thing happened to me. Five years ago I leaned my 710 up against a fence and here I sit , certain I accidently grabbed a fence post and left the remington behind?!?

Although I haven't lost one, I just found one about 2 weeks back.

Was out for a skidoo ride and taking a shortcut through town. The trail swings right behind the co-op. I noticed the case laying on the trail and stopped to pick it up. i could tell there was a gun inside by the weight. I waited about 5 mins, and had just started to write my phone # in the snowbank on the side of the trail when I heard a machine in the distance.

Sure enough, it's the guy who lost it and his kid. Seems some lashing on the sled came loose. The guy was so happy, when he shook my hand thanks, I thought he wasn't gonna let go!

I sort of lost a gun.

When I younger and left home my neighbor came by and "borrowed" my Ithaca Model 37 while doing some work for my folks in the basement.

A couple of years later when I came home for a visit and I couldn't find my shotgun I suspected what happened as he always liked that shotgun.

I went to my neighbors house and reborrowed my shotgun along with six boxes of birdshot when just his wife was home. He had the nerve to complain that I stole his shotgun, but SN's don't lie.

I dismounted form a horse and had lunch once.

I lef tthe rifle in the scabbard, and the horse walked away, it wasn't straying far form the grass and the pond.

Of course he rolled aorund on my rifle, knocking the scope out of whack.

I take my rifle out of the scabbard now...:D

Can you imagine if someone els shot that moose would have thought if he found the rifle in the rack?

it would be even better if somebody spoted it and then noticed it was pointing a rifle at him :D :D

I and friends have mis-laid rifles at kill sites.
In the excitement of the moment, congratulating the successfull hunter, unpacking the gutting tools etc, rifles are leaned against a tree or laid on the grass. Then, when the grass is disturbed or the rifle is knocked over, it disapears under the grass etc.
I now tie a longish piece of red tagging tape on the sling to help out these tired old eyes.

We lost four rifles and my favorite SXS " business gun" in a canoe wreck about 25 years ago, almost lost my life as well!
long story, still painful, not really too exited about getting into it!:(

ha, thats a good one!!!!!:D
definitly something to do in the futur!!!!! Thanks:D

THis reminds me of two stories. A couple of years ago my dad knocked a spike horn whitetail down at about dusk. Walked up to it and laid his rifle in the grass to gut it. He got it gutted and hung and then couldn't find his rifle in the dark. This is just about the time is starter pouring rain. SO he stumbled around in the dark and rain for an hour or so before he saw some gleam off of the plastic bag protectinbg his scope and found the rifle.

Also:
My dad, cousin, and his dad all get to the duck pond, this is a two hour four-wheeler ride from the nearest town and a further two hours by car to his house. My cousin and I start getting our shotguns together so we can go jump the pond, but when my cousin's dad reaches into the case to pull out his shotgun, his Remington 7400 .308 appears. Needless to say the rifle in its case went sailing about 20 feet into the alders, followed by enough curses.
