I have a Remington 7400 carbine that's put a lot of deer and moose meat in the freezer. I also have a Model Four Remington that mostly spends its days as a safe queen. I know a few folks might argue with me, but for a semi auto for under or around a grand, I think it would be a good choice.
You might also consider a Browning Bar, another fine rifle that won't break the bank.
I bought my 7400 when I was paying a mortgage, and raising a family, after I could afford it, I did buy a Robinson Armament XCR which is my new game getter. I really like the RA, but I still take my 7400 out hunting on occasion.
