Yesterday was the day for my every so often inspection of the arsenal, where I clear out the works, pass an oiled patch down the bores and give a quick inspection for rusting etc. Well up comes the 1943 Izhevsk Mosin and whilst it's under the the inspection light I realize it has some grind marks I had not noticed before(got the rifle last Dec. in a spur of the moment purchase and have yet to fire it)which immediately made me think ex-sniper from what I've heard about the welding then grinding flush. After looking inside and seeing the two drilled and tapped holes I knew for certain I had an ex-sniper. I know they're not all that rare or anything but does peek my interest in shooting it since to be used as a sniper it must have shot pretty well.Anyways just a nice little surprise for me and possibly an initiative to inspect my purchases a little more carefully ;)

I had that experience when I bought my 1945 91/30 from Reliable Guns a long time ago. My first thought was that I had a bunch of rust on the receiver that was blued over. I was pleasantly surprised after doing some research that I had an ex-sniper in my possession! (great shooter, too.)

Good find there, maybe one day you can try to reinstall the scope mount and get yourself a sniper mosin.

Well if the holes weren't plugged I'd consider buying an authentic or at least repro mount but seeing how the holes are plugged I'll leave her alone. If anything I'll throw on one of the mounts that replaces the rear sight like I've got on my other Mosin.

Very cool find, it's almost like finding 20$ in that coat pocket you forgot about!

A guy I ride with lost all his American money ($800.00) two years ago on a trip to the states, he just let me know that he found it in the lining of his jacket, Thats a nice bonus, he thought it was long gone.

They sell Russian repro scopes and brackets, they come with the drill and tap to mount them, Check Ebay they are always on there.

Oh I know I've seen them around. It's just I don't like to mess with my surplus rifles except my Chinese SKS which I plan on drilling and tapping for a Choate side mount.
