excel Bullets

Excel

Howdy ; Is EXCELL still in business ? or just not as much ? as I seldon see them.

Yeah, they are still in business. I met Marty last Wednesday to pick up some bullet I ordered. Apparently he was down with a nasty flu for the last 2-weeks.

I can only speak for thier .40's.. Since they switched Dies about a year ago, they are a lot better.. you do tend to get quite a bit of variation though.. (Weight, and diameter) however the cost is well worth the difference..

Last time I measured them in detail I was getting a +/- 4 grains in weight across a 30 bullet sample. Width and length also varied as well.

For a price as low as thiers, you get what you pay for.. (That's not a complaint on my part, as they are my preferred bullet right now..)

Loading the excel in your 40

How are you deciding what charge to put behind these bullets with the variance. I have about 2k sitting on my bench with the same thing, however I am unsure on how to charge these.

Good question.. and Since I shoot IPSC with it (with a penalty if I don't hit the required power factor).. the load I use is an average of 175 PF (170 is the min).. I can see anywhere between 170 - 177pf. you get the occasional one the really drops the FPS every once in a while, but since they average it, it works out OK with the increase.

I shoot them out of a Tanfo with a poly barrel, which really likes the excel (thin copper jacket I guess).. they are consistent accuracy wise, even with the variation in weight

At the time, I couldn't justify the money savings to produce inferior ammo. In my mind instead of saving 20-30 dollars, I'd wasted the cost of the primer and powder.

To each his own, but I switched to the Frontier bullets and never looked back.

For me it was also the cost of shipping as well.. I could pick up the excel right from the factory.. others I had to factor in the cost of shipping as well.. in the end. it was more then a few hundreds difference in price..

I only can comment on their 45acp stuff. A good percentage of the lead ones I have are coated in blue wax, half of it missing from the lube grooves. Most of the copper plated ones are oversized and they leave that ridge around my cases when reloaded. Also, no matter what I tried, I could never get their 200gr LSWC to stop tumbling during trajectory. They would always hit the paper lop-sided instead of square-on. This was happening in both of my 1911's. I tried lighter loads and hotter ones....nothing solved it. Sure, they're cheap to buy ....but you're certaintly getting what you paid for.

Well I've said it before on this forum; if you are using a Tanfoglio gun with a polygonal barrel you will have absolutely no issue shooting Excel bullets. They shoot VERY well out of these guns. If you are shooting anything with button rifling you are going to be hit and miss, so know that going in.

What is your price per 1000?

Raw material costs have gone up recently, but the last time I spoke to him his price was around $65.00 per thousand if memory serves. He usually does better for bulk orders. I'm still finishing up from my last order, which was cheaper.

My last order last year was $65.00 as well, his price went up tho, I paid for $70.00/thousand of 40SW. This was the order I picked up this week.

Blindman... that's $70.00 per thousand tax in. :)
