Expectations of success

When I go hunting I have expectations of shooting an animal what ever species I am pursuing at that time.
What success rate do you expect before the Hunt?

On Vancouver Island, a game biologist giving a talk on hunting success said that it takes between 19 and 27 hunting days per deer shot, depending on deer population numbers. Hard to feel very optimistic with those sort of numbers

It really doesnt matter if I shoot.. It's always nice to be out in the bush and if I see somthing, even better.

I average about 3 hunting days per big game animal shot. That includes all the days fruitlessly spent elk hunting after I've filled the other tags.

I answered that I always expect success. Why would I buy a tag for an animal I know I won't even get a shot at.

But at the same time I have been out when I know the chance of success is relatively low. That just means I have to do all that I can do to find the critter I am after.

After the amount of Deer I seen in a very half arsed hunt in Alberta, I would now expect 100% success.

I go out eagerly and with optimism.

It depends on the tag. I don't expect to shoot an elk every year, but my chances of a mulie doe are pretty good. It's just nice to get out.

Strangely enough, in approx 20 yrs hunting I have always taken a deer on the day I've seen an owl (6 now, including this year's doe).

I wished it worked this way for 6/49....

depends on the species for sure.
I can shoot deer pretty much at will...
Elk and moose are a little tougher.
course if I drive a few miles from home I up my chances on the latter

Oh. I buy an elk tag every year and have only spent 12 days (one or two each year) actually hunting specifically for them. BUT if I didn't buy the tag, I'd be tripping over the bastards all season.

Saw a legal bull on the way to work last week on land I had permission for. No rifle or licenses in the truck. Now that that has been rectified, I don't expect to see another this season.

I don't expect to kill something every time out, but I expect to have success every time out.
