Has anyone had any personal experience in shipping surplus rifle scopes from the USA? Jumping through all the government hoops and obtaining the permits, etc? Wait times, costs, etc..

The one I am looking at is a military surplus German unit and is dime-a-dozen down there but unobtainable here. 98% of the outlets selling them won't ship to Canada, but I did find one that would but stated in some very small print that they would not be responsible for seized items at the border.. sneaky. My other alternative is to ship it near the border and drive across and pick it up but would need the paperwork to cover it.

Thanks..

read the sticky

about import export
a guy from ontario bought a scope from me last week cause the us guys would not ship

you will not like it in jail

The paperwork would involve an export licence obtained by a licenced US exporter. Find a licenced exporter, obtain the Cdn. import permit, sent it to the US exporter, he will get the export licence. Once it has been issued - if it is issued - you are good to go.

It was not

to bad until about 4 months ago. I got my Weaver 36 that way.

If you want to import it yourself go ahead but it is going to cost you on average and extra 250.00 US minimium.

If you are thinking anything gun related from the US you had better plan well in advance to get it on someone elses permit. The days of getting it quick is over.

Plan on using your overdraft or line of credit.

"Import" a scope?? LOL

You mean have it shipped over the border right?

I would hope there's nothing illegal about that. If they won't ship, go down and bring it over. Optics are optics whether or not they attach to a firearm, no?

Scopes that are not sold to or used by military (even some commercial mil-dot) are still allowed for export out of US without paperwork; but many online reailers choose not to play with DOS or DOC restrictions as even those very offices interpret their own rules depending on which side of the bed they wake up at every morning.

Hunting or sporting scopes are allowed. YMMV

Problem is that different agencies and retailers interpret the regs different ways on different days. There has been a lot of speculation and some complete BS on these forums, but bottom line is that a regular duplex scope should not be restricted. Some retailers do still ship unrestricted scopes to Canada, look for them.
