What is your experience with the difference in brass volume and what effect could you expect. I appreciate there would be a difference if you put 45 gr Varget in Winchester .308 or in Imperial .308 brass, but all other factors the same, what would be the result? Thanks!

The chamber pressure would be different for the different brass volume. That would affect your point of impact. I saw a show on the American Marine national match shooting group. They do their own reloads.They weight each brass casing and use ones that are the same weight for a competition.
