Does anyone have the Grizzly with the ghost ring sight and choke system. What your experience with the sights ? Are they adjustable ? what is the quality and and strength of the wings ? Will they take the recoild generated without falling off. Or are they just cheap stamped parts ? Is this model Grizzly drilled and tap and the sights able to be removed. What are the chokes like ? Will they handled repeated fireings of slugs without bulgeing or siezing up in the threads. Are they complatable wih any aftermarket chokes ?

I just got the 12.5" Grizzly with ghost ring sights and removable chokes.

Everything looks solid, the sights are adjustable and sturdy, they are screwed on and don't move with recoil or anything short of a hammer blow. The wings are very solid as is the overall construction.

The choke system is the Browning Invector system and seems very solid as well. No problems though I only have 30 rounds through it.

I took it apart to de-oil and it is a very sturdy build.

cant speak for the ghost rings sites or chokes, since i have one of the first Grizzlies which came with bead sight and no chokes, but the gun itself is - IMO - much more solidly built than a Remington Express or Mossberg 500. everything seems beefier and heavier than an 870.

this comes with a downside, of course - the receiver weighs significantly more than my Wingmaster receiver.

How does everyone find the 12.5 " barrel to handle. I am so used to a 18 " just wondering how much velocity will the short barrel give up when using slugs ?

Just came back from the range. Using good heavy rifle bench technique I managed to group 1 oz slugs from Win into 2" at 40 yds. Federals went into 3.2" groups. The sights are first rate.

I am more impressed every time I use the grizzly. The thing is like a military version of the 870 and seems rock solid.

More shooting

More extensive tests with the Grizzly. Shot about 25 slugs today and 15 double ought Buck. The sights are lovely to use and easy to adjust. My Grizzly is on with the back sight far left and almost as low as it will go. Excellent sight picture.

No failures yet except.... I have short stroked it a few times and need to remember to rack it hard. This is my fault as I am in save the hull mode rather than combat mode at the range. The action is smooth but firing a few hundred familiarization rounds is a good idea.

The trigger pull is awful by rifle standards but adequate. The short package balances well and is very quick to get on target.

The 2 3/4 Winchester slugs have flyers and the average is closer to 4.5 " at 40 Meters out of the modified choke. Best group today was 3.5" and worst was an ugly 5.5" Velocity today averaged 1348ft/sec

Shot 4 groups with the Feds and the average is about 3" and the velocity was a bit higher at 1354 ft/sec. Very consistent with a best group of 2.2 inches and a worst of 4 inches (3 shot groups)

I'd bet due to speed inflation these slugs would get around 1550fps in a long barrel so I lose 200fps for the handiness of a 12.5 inch barrel. I am willing to bet the soft slugs will penetrate better with less velocity.

Despite the higher velocity the Federals seem to kick softer than the Winchester but neither are really bad. I am looking at ordering some challenger slugs as I have given up on locating Brennekes.

3" buckshot spreads fairly fast out of the modified choke with Win 15 pellet 00 consistently getting better patterns than the 15 pellet 00 Federals. Despite this the Federals often have a group of 4-5 pellets close to the point of aim with the rest widely dispersed where the Win is more evenly dispersed but at 25M there may be less pellets in thee 5" and 10" rings than the Federals. On balance I prefer the Winchester, which also center the spread at the same POI as the slugs where the Fed 00 seems low.

I tried to chronograph the buck but got lots of error readings. Federal; was at about 1050 and Win a bit faster at 1100 but not sure I trust the readings as I was within 10 feet to ensure no chronograph damage and had some muzzle blast issues.

Great rig.

I just held my 18" express with 2 shot extension, and 12" grizzly with bead sight, and guessed they weigh about the same. without the 2 shot extension the 18" would probably be lighter. and the 12" grizzly with ghost sights is noticeably heavier then the bead sight version.

If I had mine I could post my opinion.
If I don't get it very soon I will be posting an opinion..but it won't be about the shotgun!

I agree about the weight. When you fire 40 shots out of one though the extra weight is a blessing. These Grizzlies are SOLID!
