Moving to Kelowna for school for a few months and anticipating the range being much moer busy than our great, somewhat sleepy range in Pemberton where you can call seize-fires any time to walk out and check/swap targets. Figure I need a decent spotting scope. Would like something with which I can see .30cal bullet holes out to atleast 200 but preferably 300m that won't break the bank. They have the Bushnell Trophy 20-60x by 65mm at Wholesale sports for $229.66 or been loking at a similar magnification Redfield for around $200US but haven't found a dealer yet. Thoughts?

I have the Bushnell although I got mine for $150. It's pretty good. Clarity is really very good. The only complaint I have about it is that the eye relief is not that great at higher magnification meaning you sometimes touch up against the scope and you have to wait for it to stabilize before you can really look at something.

For the price they are not bad optics, if you wear glasses they can a pain at higher magnification and at max power there is a little degradation of image. They beat the hell out of can. tire $100 specials thats for sure. The only other scope in this price range would be a Vortex I think it was the nomad. Better optically than the Bushnell and more compact, similar diameter and power range.

If you really think that you will be cranking it up to 60x magnification, I would suggest that you look at one and try it before you buy. Every 60x scope I've looked at that had a 60mm objective was pretty much useless at the highest power...very dark, very dim, and poor image quality. An 80mm objective is heavier and more expensive, but it lets you utilize the 60x magnification, and even then only under ideal, bright conditions.

I find that my older Bushnell, a 15-45x scope with a 60mm objective, is quite usable for seeing bullet holes at 300 yard ranges.

X2. Please divide the objective dia in mm by two and the result will be the maximum power you can really use. BTW dont even think you can buy good brand new scope for under $300 unless its been pre-owned....or better jet just USED.

Thanks for the input. I'm under no illusions as to be able to purchase a 'good' spotting scope in the price range I'm looking, just hoping for something that will be adequate for seeing .30cal holes out to 300m. Saving my pennies for new glass for my rifle so have to cut corners somewhere...
