Experiences with recent 700s?

I have had a few 700's, they were all good except for the usual issues I have with them. I just don't like the triggers and replace them, stocks are our business and therefore they get replaced. I prefer AICS/AI type mag systems so that get's mostly replaced although I have shot a few as ADL/BDL. Barrels have been very good so far and I have bought a few old actions to fit new "take-off" barrels from custom rifle builders. All shot very well. Somehow I quite like the safety position and the way the bolt cycles on the 700. Prefer it to the T3 even. Bought a new in box 700 in 300wm early last year.

Did a few changes but left the original barrel on. No load development, just threw one load together with 178 ELDX.

That’s how Remingtons shoot. I wouldn’t let a gunsmith relocate a bolt handle or bush a firing pin hole on one. Unnecessary.
 
Dennis, that gouge looks to be the result of using Winchester primers from that bad run from several years back. Winchester and Remington.... not a great combo ;). GD

I thought possibly primer damage at first but that gouge is out considerably farther than the primer diameter. I can't explain it.
 
That was going to be my guess too until Guntech pointed out the location!

Seeing as how both of you fellows are here, (Misters Leeper and Sorensen) mind if I ask a totally unrelated question?

Every one of his builds he posts seems to shoot like that and look good doing it. Might have more to do with his shooting and smithing skills than Remington magic

What do they say; it’s not the arrow but the Irishman? :dancingbanana:

Let's say I were to pursue a 280 Rem chambered rifle. Is Ackley-afying it as easy as having the barrel set back a few thou and running a 280 AI reamer through it? Or is there more to it than that?
 
Yes... setting the barrel back slightly and chambering to the correct headspace... on most push feed actions.

Actions as a pre 64 Model 70 require more work because of the extractor relief cut in the barrel.
 
Does a Ruger 77 have the extractor cut? I've never thought to look. In that case, you're having to machine so its one exact turn, I reckon? Sounds like a pain

Thanks Joel, yes we have a small family run outfit. I try to go shooting as much as I can as well.

Thanks Conor, well under 1/2Moa is kind of my goal on medium range rifles. I do however struggle with my 6.5CM to achieve this consistently, she is not quite at the races only doing 1/2-3/4". Maybe the carbon barrel, maybe the loads/bullets. The 300wm has the original barrel on her, just gave the bore a polish. My take is, the barrel is the most important on a rifle, followed by bedding, followed by the stock, followed by the action.
