I have been out of the loop lately what is new and exciting on the market but we are having a competition at the range next month and am looking at purchasing something to join in. Need something in semi auto for a "running deer" style shoot that won't break the bank. It's a wood deer silhouette that is mounted on a pulley system that kind of zip lines in front. I'm thinking open sights? I'm thinking also something in .223 or even if there is a rifle that will take 40cal mags that would work also. Any suggestions??

Look for an older Remington model seven or other brand lightweight used in 223 and it will definetley shoot that distance and further and it will get you started untill your ready to spend more and upgrade to a heavier barrel. Thes make great little varmint rifles too---Dieseldog!

You're going to be hard pressed to find something semi-auto, non restricted and sub $500. The only things that come to mind are the sks or a .22, both of which will put holes in paper. If you're willing to jump up to .308, the m305 will be plenty of gun. Not much in terms of .223's though non restricted until you hit the t97.

Ruger 44 carbine or an sks will do just fine at 50 yards. If you get an sks and shim the recoil lug with brass shim stock it'll tighten you're groups up considerably. If It were me, At that distance, I'd use a 22lr if I was allowed.
